Sydney, September 22. A motion of censure has been tabled against the Minister of Lands (Hon. J. L. Trefle),' based on the allotment of additional holdings.
HOTEL TRAGEDY. Sydney, September 22. Hugh Brown, a chauffeur, attempted to shoot Mrs. Frances Jefferson, licensee of the Rifle Brigade Hotel, but missed his mark. A barmaid named Foley rushed to the assistance of Mrs. Jefferson. Brown, mistaking her for Mrs. Jefferson, fired and'killed 'her. He then committed suicide.. Brown was a married man. He is believed to have been infatuated with, Mrs. Jefferson; _ Yesterday he enlisted in tlie.Expeditionary Force as a motor transport driver.
NEW COMET DISCOVERED. Melbourne, September 22. The Government Astronomer reports the discovery of a new comet towards tho south-east. It is visible to the naked eye. DEATH SENTENCE COMMUTED. Sydney, Septembor 22. The sentence of death on William King, found guilty.on May 26 of the wilful murdor of his wife, who was discovered on May 16 with her throat cut, has been commuted to imprisonment for life. DROUGHT-STRICKEN SETTLERS. Perth, September 22. ■Che Premier has resolved to raise £200,000 from the Commonwealth to relievo drought-stricken settlers. COST OF CABLE MESSAGES. (Rec. CHARGE AGAI\ T ST A FINANCIER. (Reo. September 22, 9 p.m.) Sydney, September 22. Joseph Earle Hermann, financier, was charged] with uttering a forged promissory note for £2689 15s. Gd. The prosecution alleged there wero other notes supposed to bo forgeries, totalling nearly £42,000. Bail was refused. The hearing was adjourned to September 29. [The accused was until recently a director of Bo>vron Bros. , Export and Trading Company, and a recent message stated that he .was removed to a private hospital.]
