BRISK BIDDING FOE, CASE OF . POTATOES. Messrs. Laery and Co., Ltd., offered at their fruit markets yesterday morning one easel containing 541b. of new potatoes which Mr. S. Steele, of Kamo, instructed should be' 6old on behalf of the fund for helping the wives and children of the men who are leaving for the front. Both the European and the Chinese buyers were perfectly willing to. follow'the exceltent example shown in other parts of the Dominion. Messrs. Burge, H. Stanbridge, and Edilson each bid Bd. per lb;, and again offered the case for sale, and Mr. Chun Wall, after bidding up to sd. per lb., elected to place the case on the market for sale again. -The result was that Mr. Burge bought the potatoes in at 4d. per lb. The fund in question will benefit by this sale to tho estent of £7 8s! 6d. ' Mr. Steele, in his patriotic offer, also gave instructions to the auctioneers that any amount realising over 3d. per lb; for a consignment of potatoes sent to' this market for sale should also be handed to tho fund, remarking at the eame time' that he was anxious to see wliat 'sports yon have in Wellington. It is satisfactory to chronicle that the auctioneers were able to exceed the sum' of 3d. per lb. ..
Constable Holmes, of the Mount Cook Police, who is on the Imperial Army Reserve, lias been ordered to Teport for service to-day, and yesterday Ins colleagues in taking farewell of him presented him'with a purse- of sovereigns. Senior-Sergeant Dew and Detective-Ser-geant Cassells, in the course of brief sneeches, remarked that, as long as Mr. Holmes was away; he need hove absolutely no worry about liis wife and child, as members of the Forco would guarantee their support. Constable Holmes liad married since coming to New Zealand. ■ ■ The services rendered by the cadots of St. Patrick's and Wellington Col T leges in facilitating . the work of ■ the Defence authorities is praiseworthy; On the day of the departure of tlie first section of the Expeditionary Force the cfldets guarded tlie wharves under unfavourable weather conditions. Yesterday 100 cadets from St. Patrick's College wore on duty at the call of the Department, guarding the nrmroaches to the Glasgow and Railway Wharves. Today tlie Wellington College boys will assume the duties performed by the other boys yesterday., Tlie combined college cadets will assist in ltrening the route clear for tho main.
