MASTERTON NOTES.
The annual festival of St. Matthew was held in St. Matthew's Church _ on Sunday. .In the evening an appropriate sermon was preached by tho Bishop of Wollineton. The Carterton choir assisted in tno musical portion of the service. The country in the Wairarapa presents a' very' parched appearance Practically no rain has fallen thi3 month, and farmers; are having, a particularly bad time. • A heavy frost on Saturday .morning .did considerable damage to early potato crops. ' The butter sold by the Masterton Cooperative Dairy Company during the month of August slowed an increase of 21811b. on the quantity sold in the same month last year, _ < ■ ' ' A bogey competition was held by. the Masterton. Golf Club on Saturday. The best card handed in in the "A" grade was by C. Bennett; and in the "B" grade by E. Bell. •-" Subscriptions are being invited here in aid of the sufferers by the Huntly disaster. , The annual examination of tho Masterton Nursing Division of tho St. John Brigade is to be held on Wednesday eveuing. Dr. Arthur Hosking is' the examiner.
