BRITISH CRUISER DISABLED AT ZANZIBAR
GERMAN WARSHIP ATTACKS PEGASUS (Rec. Soptember 21, 11.40 p.m.) London,' September 20. "The Times" publishes messages from British East Africa reporting that the German cruiser Kouigsberg unexpectedly attacked the British cruiser Pegasus while she was anchored in Zanzibar having her boilers cleaned. The Pegasus was disabled, and 25 of her crew were killed and eighty, wounded. The Konigsberg escaped. The Pegasus is a sister ship to the third-class cruiser Psyche, now in Wellington, and the Konigsberg is a similar vessel to the Leipzig and Numberg, the two German third-class cruisers now at large in tlio Pacific. The details of the two vessels are as follow:— Pegasus.—2l3s tons; 20 knots; eight 4-in. and eight 3-pounder guns; complement, 234 men; built 1899: Konigsberg.—33so tons; 23.5 knots; ten 4.lin. and- 8 2.1-in. guns; complement, 322 men; built 1907. The Pegasus belongs to the Cape of Good Hope Squadron,' which consists of the Hyacinth, second-class cruiser, and the Pegasus and the Astraea, third-cla6S cruisers The squadron is under Rear-Admiral King-Hall, formerly on the Australian Station. The principal officers on the Pegasus are: — Commander J. A. Ingles, Lieut.-Commander R. C. Turner, Lieutenants H. V. Lavington, G. St. J. Llewellyn, and G. A. Hattersley-Smith, Engineer-Lieu-tenant G. M. Gay, Staff Surgeon A. J. Howitt.
