A SWORD OF HONOUR
PRESENTED BY THE CITIZENS. In view of- the (fact that General Sir Alexander Godley's term of engagement with.tho, New Zealand-Government will be finished in a little over a year, and that it is improbable that he will return again to New, Zealand, a movement was set up to, present him with a sword of honour, towards which the four centres were to be asked to subscribe -£25.each. :: ■ -;. :• i . At the last meeting of the Auckland .City Council, Mr. P: M. Mackay, formally .objected to the vote of £25 from •the ''unauthorised ,iexpenditure;; .fund being made, for this purpose. " Tho Mayor said that the vote had been .passed unanimously a>t a special meeting '.of the" council,- Mr.: Mackay, though ho had been notified to attend, being absent. He explained; that Mr. A.M. Myers had advised hhu that tho other centres were each subscribing £25 towards the purchase of this sword of honour for General Godley, in recognition of his services in establishing tho territorial system of training. Auckland could not stand out when the other centres were taking action. The money would be taken out of the unauthorised expenditure.- . Mr. Nerheny remarked, as the council proceeded to other business, that the other centres had turned ■ the scheme .down, and that the Mayor of Christchurch had paid the £25 out of his own pocket.
