The death occurred on Saturday of an old resident of Ashhurton, ' Mrs. Thomas A. Gates, who waß born in Bristol, England, in 1832, and with her husband (who survives her) came to New Zealand in 1864. Mr. Peter L. Muir, formerly secrotarv of the Wellington Tailors' Union, died in Queensland last weßk. A Press Association cablegram from Sydney states that' Te Rata Mahuta and, the throe Chiefs who went.to England with him to interview the King (regarding alleged breaohes ,of the Treaty of Waitangi), ■reached Sydney on their return to New Zealand on Wednesday. Dr. R. M. Muir, son-of Mr. James Muir, of ,the firm of ' Joseph Nathan and Co., is now medical.officer on the White Star liner Corinthio. V He intends to proceed to London again in that capacity, and will, on arrival, offer his services to the Army Medical Corps for service at the fronts Dr.. Muir has been less than six years in traversing the full medical course at Edinburgh
