JOTTINGS FROM PROVINCIAL CENTRES. (Prom Our Special Correspondents.) WANGANUI. Tho biennial election of the Gonville Town Board resulted in the re-election o? tho chairman (Mr. A; G. Bignell), together with Messrs. J. C Arnold, H. Moore, N. P. Svenscn. G. Wenson, J. B. Gilbert, and H. F. Thayer. Tho last three are now members. For tho Uastlecliff Town Board tho old chairman, Mr. C. M. Cresswell, was also returned, together with Messrs. l< , . G. Nowcombe, C. S. M'Kenzie. R. Sanders, B. G. Firth, E. G. M'Dougall, and H. aimpson.

PAHIATUA. The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the Pahiatua Bowling Club:—President, Mr. Gco. Moore; vice-presidents, Messrs. H. Mfahcrry and T. F. Hewat; secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. Hughes, auditor. Mr. J. <le V. Howard. Messrs. ?. ■Thomson, W. Ransom, W. White Scott, W. I. Husband, W. Wakoman, C. E. Hosking, and I)r. Paterson v?ero appointed a gonernl committee.- Mr. w. Beck (Paimerston North) was appointed tho club's delegate to the Manawatu Centre. .The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £26 17s. 3d. The excess of assets over liabilities was Bet down at £151 17s. 3d. Objections to certain names on the roll for the Mangahao riding of the Pahiatua County have boA lodged by several ratepayers at Ballance. The objections .will probably be heard at Paliiatua by tho Magistrate shortly. The Bight Rev. Dr. Sproty Bishop of Wellington, will visit Pahiatua this week-end. He will conduct a eonfirmaion service in St. Peter's Church, Pahiatua, on Sundaj' evening. _ Owing to th'e war, the Kaitawa Mor-ris-tube Club will not hold its annual "social" this year. The trophies won during the season will bo presented at the concluding "shoot," wtich will bo hold next week. Tho Pahiatua Senior Cadet Company is holding a 'social" on Monday evening in Pahiatja in aid of the Patriotic Fund. < Tho Sev. M. Bawden Harris, of Pahiatua, and Mr. H. Bloomfield, home missioner, Pongaroa, have been appointed delegates to the Presbyterian General Assembly to be held at Dunedin in November. The funeral of the late Mr. J. T. Priest, who was accidentally killed at Ngaturi this week, was largely attended; Mr. Priest was a former resident of the Wootlville district, and Priest's Road, in ±he Woodville' County, 'was named after him.

At tho sitting of the Supreme Court in Masterton next week tho licensee of the Kumoroa Hotel will apply for a mandamus to compel the Pahiatua Licensing Gommitteo to cancel its decision tomm deprive him of his license. A iiumbor of men called at the police station in Masterton on Thursday evening and asked to bo given a night's lodging. They hod proceeded from Wellington, having previously arrived from Macadea, where they were serving on tho captured German ship La Lelee. At tho meeting of the Fire Board in Mastorton.on Thursday tho matter of the amalgamation of the Fire Brigade and Firo Board came up for consideration. The chairman reported that a joint meeting of tho two bouies had been held, but had resulted in a deadlock, and it would now be necossary for the board to deal with tho matter. After discussion, it was decidod to adjourn tho meeting to an early date to deal fully with the question. Tho Mayoress of Masterton (Mrs. J. M. ''''.'■ Six teams liavo entered for the Friendly Societies' eeven-a-side football tournament, to be held on the old show ground's, Masterton, this afternoon. The Carterton Druids have won tho competition for many years, and the strong team they are putting in the field this veur points to their being again successful. A man named Philip Juno was fined £2 and costs to-day for committing a breach of the Licensing Act by bringing liquor into a No-License district •without giving the address of tho person for whom the liquor was intended. OTAKI. At the Police Court yesterday J. G. Stevens was fined 20s. and costs Gs. for failing to register his motor-car, while Roy Cooper was fined a similar amount and costs 12s. for riding a bicycle at night without a light. ' Messrs. W. Tompsitt and A. Johnston wore the J.P.'«. . The following have been selected by Messrs. H. Small, H. Nicolson, and J. Only four of tho previous members are seeking ro-olection, and consequently much now blood is in tho fiold. , Many of the candjdates arc of a progressive turn of mind, and aro anxious to see the town make much more rapid progress. Miss \ Paulino Brown wa-s tho most successful in tho oecorative class, while in fniit and vegetables Messrs. Simcox, Taylor, and Mathwayt were the chief ones to gain, honours. Mrs. Dillon carried the honours for the_ domestic section. Miss Robinson, of Manakaii, leaves shortly to take up residence in Auckland. Ten nominations have been received for the position of Commissioners on the Otaki Town Board, viz., Messrs. J. Lomns, A. W. Tatton, J. S. Pole, H. Nicolson, J. G. Stevens, 0 , . J. D'Ath, J. FEATHERSTON. Under the auspices of the Literary and Debating Society a lecture on "Mendelssohn?' was given by Mr. J. H. Fieldhouse in the Masonic Hall on Thursday evening. There was a large attendance, and an excellent entertainment was provided. Vocal items from tho composer's works wore rendered by Mrs. Fieldhouse, Misses Hursthouso, Yule (2), and Messrs. I. V. Wilson and J. H. Carson. Miss Mona Moore, A.T.C.L., played tho accompaniments. Tho town lireboll which was installed after the explosion was used for tho first timo on Friday morning. The young man who gave the alarm climbed to the top of tho structure- and swung the tongue, ae ho did not know how to ring the boll. Tho tiro occurred at about 2.30 a.m. in a building adjoining Gallagher's fruit shop. Mr. Gallagher used this building as a storehouse, and his whole 6tock was destroyed, including a largo amount of lish. Tho stock was not insured. The building itself belongs to Mr. Robinson, and was insured in tho New Zealand office for £175. Tho adjoining building, belonging to Roys Bros., and used as a billiard saloon, was damaged on ono wall. It was insured in tho Commercial Union. GREYTOWN. A meeting of tho Boy Scouts' Committeo was hold on Thursday night. It was decided to hold a children's party to raise funds for equipment. Over CO boys havo been enrolled. A special committeo has been set up to make arrangomonts, and has fixed Octobor 1 as the dato of the party. A fancy-dress football match in aid of tho War Fund was played hero on Thursday afternoon. Tiioro wae a good attendance. In tho evening a danco was hold ill tho Porestors' Hall.
