SICKNESS IN HORSES. STRANGLES AT AWAPTJNI CAMP. It appears that an outbreak ■ of strangles has occurred among the horses at the cainp at Palmerston, and on Thursday Mr. G.~ Hunter asked the Minister whether ho was aware of it, and , whether effective measures were being taken to prevent tho spread of tho disease. The Hon. J. Allen said ho had heard unofficially that strangles had broken '"»il. in tho camp at Awapurii, and ho Lad instituted inquiries, but had not yet received replies. ' •SW: r.' Witty: Are the eick horses beina isolated?- _ Mr. Allen: I know that at tho camp in Canterbiry when strangles broke out tho horses were isolated at once. Mr.'Hunter:.lt is very necessary that such steps should be taken because if not- tho disease will go right through the camp, and the result will be that when- the horses arrive at Homo they will bo absolutely unfit for work. Mr. Allen said.that ho was sure that all necessary precautionary measures would be taken. Later in the afternoon tho Minister said that he had received a report from the Director of Remounts to the effect that the most • efFectivo measures were being taken to cope with the outbreak and that tho latest information was that the trouble was decreasing.
TRAINING RESERVES. COMPULSORY PARADE. .With a view'.to getting the-General Iraining Section accustomed to battalion drill.as quickly as possible, a compulsory. parade has been ordered for the sth (W.ellington) regiment this afternoon. Tho battalion, loss D Company, mil parade at'the Drill Hall, Buckle Street, at 2.20 p.m. to-day, under Colonel Brandon. D Company, lets Platoons 3 and ,1, will parado at the Drill Mall, Lower, Hutt, at the sarao time (under Major Ross), and Pla-tcons 3 and 4 will parade.at Johnsonvillo at the', same time. Preparatory to tho issuo of new arms, arms and equipment have to bo collected and returned to tho regimental store at onco.
TROOPS IN SAMOA. THEIR..SUMMER DRESS. x Are the.heavy uniforms worn by the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in faamoa making the men uncomfortable or. account 6f the hot weather? It would appear that some anxiety is being felt by over-anxious members of the public for the Minister of Defence had to assure a member in.Parliament tho other night that summer clothinc was being rushed down to tho Islands to relievo tho troops. Aβ a matter of taot they are not in urgent need of further clothing, for the heavy uniforms n which ihey embarked are not tho only clothes they took. Probably, in anticipation of .tropical weather,' members of tho advance party were supplied with a pair, of "shorts," or knickers, Similar to those, worn by 'the Senior Cadets. Those are wide and airy, and no doubt tho men are all wearing th"in durins: tho hot Samoan days. If a too fastidious regard for their calves makes the troops dislike bare kness mid exposed legs they have another expedient to fall back on, for, in addition to his uniform, each man was supplied with a suit-of khaki denim. This is a coarse but light material, much favoured by shearers and station hands, for no amount of rough usage will put it out of action. These were, supplied to tho men to replace their uniform when on shipboard, or When doing dirty work, but they will come in handy as a light summer change. ' ' ' '•." The contractors for the liniforms have noticed one fact in counection with the uniforms for the Expeditionary Force. They are nearly all on the large size, and the average is a good deal bigser than the uniforms of the Territorial Forces.
THE MEN AT THE FORTS. In the Houso of Representatives vesterday afternoon, Mr. T. M. Wilford asked the Prime Minister if any discrimination could be made between married and single men when the Territorials were being called up for duty at the forts. The reason was, Mr. Wiiford said, that married men experienced hardship in receiving only 4s. a day. The Prime Minister promised to get a report on the subject.
