A., special correspondent of. the "Daily News" asserts that a new army of Secret composition has arrived against the Germans' right, which is retreating. The front of battle on the Aisne covera over a hundred miles. ,THE GERMAN POSITION. Parfa, September 17. The newspaper "Matin" states that the German position north of the Rivers Aire and Aisne (which join at a point thirty miles north-west of Verdun) is based upon,an important junction of the railways, which meets the German right. The position taken up seeks only to cover the Crown Prince's retreat. ■ ■ ...GERMAN,TROOPS RETURNING FROM.PRUSSIA. . ' Petrograd, September 17. It Js reported that the Germans are sending back the first line troops from <East Prussia to France. Apparently the reason for the first transfer was the 'stampeding of practically hair the.population in north-east Prussia before General Rennenkampf's troops, causing a panio in Berlin. HEBOID BRITISH ENGINEERS. Paris, September 17. 'A. wounded private of Cuirassiers relates that Cuirassiers and British Royal Engineers retreated across the Aisne at Soissons, and the Germans endeavoured to rush masses of troops aoross the bridge. Several' Royal Engineers dashed for the bridge, and laid a charge, hoping to blow the bridge up. All wore killed before the fuse could be lighted. . • Another party of Engineers crept up to the bridge, despite the machine guns and German sharpshooters hidden in a clump of trees. The whole place was an inferno. First one engineer made a rush at this gate of Hell, and while he was attempting to light the fuse a volley from the sharpshooters shot him down. A second,.third, and a fourth ranjthe gauntlet, but' all were killed. Altogether eleven were shot down. Then the German rifle fire slackened, and a twelfth man raced across and lit the fuse. The German riflemen killed him as the bridge was blown up. / ■ GEEMAN FORTRESSES PREPARING. (Reo. September 19, 0.65 a.m.) ' . '. ■ . ■ Amsterdam, September. 17. It is reported that Cologne, Dusseldorf, Wesel, and Duisburg are strengthening their fortifications and preparing their defences. Many German regiments have' traversed Liege in the direction of France. '-'■ Cologne is a fortress of the first-class. Dusseldorf, Wesel, and Duisburg are on the Rhine at points south-west, north-east, and west of Essen, where is the great armament works of the firm of Krupps. NO -IMPORTANT CHANGE IN THE POSITIONS. The following message has been received by the Prime Minister from the High Commissioner:— ■■■■.-., .■".-■-' London, September 18, (0.35 a.m.). Official.—According to Paris reports there has been no important change in the position of the armies, although the enemy are giving way slightly, but are entrenching at Montfaucon,. thirteen miles north-west of Verdun. A battle is progressing along the whole line. The Allies repulsed counterattacks both during the 'day and night. Estimates of the German losses are three thousand daily for the past fortnight. . ■ • Rome reports that Germany is hastening troops to meet the advancing Russians, now nineteen miles from the fortress of Prezmysl, in Galicia. Russia's east Prussian columns aie also marching to Prezmysl.
