CITY ROAD ROLLER

A DISCUSSION ON TENDERS. A letter received from Messrs. Andersons, Ltd., Ohristchurch, was considered at the City Council on Thursday, asking what was to bo done with regard to their tender to supply an Aveling and Porter road-roller to the council. f When the matter was before tho oil some time ago, the City Engineer recommended the acceptance of Messrß. Andersons' fender, despite the fact that Messrs. J. J. Niven and Co. tendered to supply a Clayton and Shuttleworth roller at a price £114 below that of Messrs. Andersons' tender. The engineer reported to the council last night that ho had examined tho specifications of the two makes, and, as far as essentials went, there appeared to be little difference between the two makes. But he knew that perhaps--75 per cent, of Aveling and Porter's .road rollers were in use in the United Kingdom, and he had personal knowledge of two in use in Wellington. They gave every astisfaction, and for that reason lie reepmmended thai particular rood roller. Councillor G. Frost, objected to throwing away £140. Councillor R. A. Wright thought that tho engineer had , been very fair in his remarks, and had taken up a proper and responsible position in favouring a road roller with which Jio was acquainted. Having taken up that position, tho responsibility rested with the council, and ho (Councillor Wright) thought they should accept the lower .tender. Councillor J. E. Fitzgerald said that tho argument put forward by the engineer was a vory good one, and they should follow his advice and take the machine which ho had had experience of. Councillor R. Fletcher occupied the chair during the discussion. A division was taken on the proposal to accept Messrs. Anderson's tender, and it was carried by 8 votes to 5.
