HUTT & PETONE NEWS.

(From Otir Own Oorresponderita.) . . The second of the Hutt Valley Horticultural Society's spring show was well ationded, and good business was recorded. 'Mrs. B. Johnston was awarded first prize by the judges in the decorated tables, and Mrs. W. Henry was voted by the audience to bo the winner of a similar competition. During tho evening musical items were rendered by Mrs. Paton and Mr. E. J. Hill. Williams's orchestra supplied -tho music. The show terminated _ with a sale by auction of tho retnaining articles, Mr. H. E. Leighton acting as auctioneer., , A meeting of the Petone District High School Committee was' hold last evening, there being present Messrs. M'Kenzie (chairman), Pawsoh, Lockwood, Kirk, Brice, Anderson, Townsend, and Wright. The inspector's annual report showed that a high state of efficiency was being maintained at' tho school. In this connection the committee decided to forward a letter of appreciation t<v tho headmaster (Mr. W. Foster). It was resolved_ to ask the Borough Council to set aside'a piece of land at the Recreation Grounds for agricultural purposes for 'school children. It was reported that several windows had recently been broken, wilfully at the Main School, and as the offender was known, it was resolved that..the matter'be left in the hands of the chairman and secretary, with a view to having the damage made goad. The Eov. H. Braddock applied for permission to deliver addresses to children after school hours, and Mr. Anderson moved that the'request should not he granted, suggesting that Mr. Braddock might have the use of the school on Sundays instead. The motion was 'lost,' Messrs. Brice, Anderson, and Townsend _ voting for. and the remaining five against if. A further motion that the request be acceded to up till October 31 was then moved by Mr. Pawson, and carried by 5 to 3. ■ ■qiEMiMlimyiMl,,'! ,
