The City Council has been very fortunate in one respect in connection with the war. There is seldom a time wlien the Corporation of a city As as Wellington is not compelled to import goods required in its multifarious activities. For examplo, the war broke out only a few weeks after the new and very costly Parsons' turbine engine for the Harris Street power-house had been landed, and it is only a matter of days since a large consignment of 30-inch steel pipes for the City's water system were safely landed. It is interesting to ' learn (though the civic authorities were unaware of the fact) that these pipes were manufactured in Germany. Thore is in all about 1000 feet of steel-pipiug, which is to bo utilised as a section of the .principal \Vainui main at that spot at Wainui-o-mata where the main I crosses the river twice within the mile. Hitherto the main has been Carried across the bed. of the stream, but this lias been considered so risky by the City Engineer that two bridges of concrete piers have been erected across tho stream to carry tho now stool pipes, which will now be immune- from damage by the effects of a flood. The- two stretches which have been spanned are 3601't. and 660 ft. 'in length respectively, lb is ■ understood that a tender has been accepted for the transport of tho pipes from Wellington to Woiirai, a fairly arduous task, as each pipe is 30ft.' in length and 30 inches in diameter—and there is tho big V'ainu ; hill [road to be negotiated.
