SALE OR LEASE?

CITY COUNCIL PROPERTIES. ■The Legislation Committee recom« mended to the council last night that tenders be called for the sale of' two properties in Willis Street (acquired for street-widening purposes) less the ten feet strip required for street widening.. Councillor R. A. Wright opposed Ino sale of the laud, and suggested that it should be leased. The land .would advance in. value, and it was a .pity to part with it. He moved that the matter should be referred back to the committee.

Councillor J. Fuller seconded- the amendment. He said that ine time was very inopportune for disposing of land. Apart from that, thero was tho question Of the council becoming a pro-perty-holder : or not. Councillor R. Fletcher thought that the City Council • should ; not sell .its land under any consideration. The amendment was lost, and Councillor Fuller wanted to move a further amendment to stop the recommendation of tho committee. The Mayor suggested that if the recommendation was carried, the offers re. ceived for. tho land would come oefore the council, and the matter could bo, again considered. . The. recommendation was adopted.
