TERRIFIC WAR LOSSES
RUSSIA'S HEAVY TOLL ON AUSTRIA (Rec. September 17, 8.50 p.m.) Petrograd, September 16. It is semi-officially stated that it is difficult to estimate correctly the Austrian losses, which are assuming colossal proportions. There are believed to be a quarter of a million killed and wounded, and 100,000 prisoners. Everywhere the roads are blocked by artillery, and parts of the transport columns, abandoned in their hurried flight. Several Austrian steamers and a gunboat on the Vistula have been destroyed. WOUNDED .COMING INTO VIENNA. (Rec. September 17, 10.45 p.m.) Rome, September 16. Sixty thousand wounded have reached Vionna. There is an insufficiency of doctors and medical appliances in the field. MESSAGE TO MR. MASSEY. READ IN PARLIAMENT. Tho following message, received from the High Commissioner, was read by the Prime Minister in tho House of Representatives shortly after it was received last night:— "Russian official sources state that tho rout of tho Austrian Army in Galicia was complete. Full details havo not yet been received. Tho Austrian loss sinco the taking of Lemberg is estimated at 250,000 killed and wounded, 100,000 prisoners, 400 Runs, nirtny colours, and vast Quantities of stores. The
Germans made desperate efforts to save the Austrian Army, but failed completely. At one point tho Germans lost 36 pieces of heavy artillery, and at another several dozen pieces of siege artillery," . When the figures were read detailing the awful carnage members appeared to be horrified. There were no cheers or any manifestations of joy. After reading tho message Mr. Massey said: "I think we may come to the conclusion _ that New Zealand or any other British Dominion will not become a German possession just yet. I am beginning to wonder whether our boys will be in timo to reaoh the scene of operations before the final settlement takes place. I hope they will." JAPAN'S WAR IN THE EAST ADVANCE INTO KIAO-CHAU SUSPENSORY BILL PASSED. (Rso. September 18, 0.50 a.m.) London, September 17.
