HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLES .:•■■/■ --—■■' ■>?} '; GERMAN COMER-ATTACK The Prime Minister to-day received the following cable • messages -from the High Commissioner in London:— " . London, September 16, 6.10 p.m. Official.—General position along -the Aißne, continues favourable. Enemy has delivered several counter-attacks, especially against First Army Corps. These have been repulsed. Germans. ; have given way slightly before our troops and French armies on our right and left. Enemy's loss very heavy. AVa have taken 200 prisoners. « DOINGS IN NYASALAND. The Prime Minister (the Eight Hon. W. F. Massey) received tha following official messages yesterday:— London, September i 6, 7.36 p.m. The Govornor of Nyasaland reports that a reconnaisance beyond the frontier was made on September 13, contact "being established with the enemy. ; Of 19 German officers engaged, 11 were accounted for; three others escaped, wounded. The German losses of rank and file are heavy, and the_ additional British casualties number eight. London, September 16, 9.50 p.m. The submarine Enine has returned safely after having -torpeoded a German cruiser, believed to be the Hela, «S miles, south of Heligoland. ..-..:•' London, 10.45 p.m. The Governor-General of South Africa] has cabled to the Secretary of State for the Colonies that His Majesty's. subjects in South Africa are firmly resolved! to fulfil their sacred duty by assisting with the resources at their disposal to bring this terrible war, which has been forced upon His Majesty, to a epeedy] and successful conclusion. London, September 17, 12.30 a.m. Contrary to official dispatches declaw ine that the Berlin war loan subscriptions are excellent, only £10,000,000 of £50,000,000 has been contributed. The whole Gorman Press contains advertisements appealing to German capitalists for their support in this gravo crisis, ■as no money is forthcoming from neutral Powers. ~ A superb exhibition of seamanship was given by the torpedo flotilla based upon Harwich during a gale of exceptional severity, which raged for two days. For, 24 hours hatches were battened down, while the sailors on deck duty 6tood at their posts lashed to the rails. Anti-neutrality agitation is spreading in Italy. Resolutions have been passed urging" the Government to take action lest tfiey lose the chance of extending their national boundaries. Nationalists, Radicals, Republicans, and Socialists have joined in patriotic demonstrations. Public feeling is decidedly favourable to England.
