The Minister of Defence (the Hon. J. Alien) will -leave on a short visit to Auckland by this morning's express, for the purpose of inspecting the Auck- . land detachment of the Expeditionary Force. The inspection will be made to-morrow" morning. l The Hon. W. H. Horries, who has been ill for some weeks, went down, to Parliament Buildings yesterday afternoon for a short while, but did not attempt to do any work in the House or in his office. It will be some days -yet before he resumes regular duty. His Honour the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) leaves Auckland for Rotorua to-day. . His Honour Mr. Justice Edwards arrived from Wauganui last evening.News has been received from London of the death of Mr. Leslie Sanderson, of the firm of Sanderson, Murray and Co. Mr. Sanderson was at one time manager of the Napier branch of Murray, Roberts and £0. ' Mr. H. A. Pox, proprietor of the Office Appliance Company, who was seriously injured in the railway accident at Whangamarino in May last, is still unable'to resume his business activities. He and Mrs. Fox leave on a visit to Australia to-day. Dr. J. G; Mitchell, who has resigned from the Wellington Hospital staff 'to ioiu the Expeditionary ' Forcesj has been granted one month's leave of absence oii full pay. D/. Selwyn Haslett has been appointed to' the vacant position' of junior house surgeon. Dr. Basil Adams, of South Africa, •has accepted the position of Medical Tuberculosis Officer under the Wellington Hospital Board. Mr. John Baillie, who brought a collection of English paintings and etchings out to New Zealand, is at present sojourning in the north of Auckland. His health is stili far from satisfactory. Mr. T. M. Donovan, - manager of "Everybody's Pictures" (Opera House), is again laid aside with a recurrence of his old internal trouble, which may mean another operation. The appointment of Dr. J. P. Cameron &3 medical officef for the Island of Miue, Cook Group,' is gazetted. Colonel' R. J. Collins and Mr., Titos. Bush, of Wellington, have left for Auckland, to attend the annual meeting of the council of the Dominion Bowling Association; Dr. H. Hardwick Smith's resignation as medical superintendent of the Wellington Hospital was before members of the board at the monthly meeting yesterday. In his letter to the board, he suggested that he Bhould be freed from his duties at the end of the present year. On the motion of the chairman (the Eev. W. A. Evans), the board Adopted the, following resolution:/ "That the resignation of Dr. Hardwick Slriith be accepted with regret, and that the board place on record its high appreciation of the faithful and efficient service hs has rendered to 'the board and to the varied institutions' under its control. His expert knowledge has been of incalculable benefit to the board in determining the lines of its policy, .and in the carrying out of the onerous duties devolyed upon it in the interest of the community. To every question submitted to hi& judgment his advice has been ever characterised with a Bane common'sense and a practical insight that has materially assisted the board in its decision. As superintendent of the Hospital he has maintained the high standard established by his predecessor, and by; his wise and tactful administration he has placed the institution second to none in the Dominion. His_ strength of character, his high professional standing, and his unfailing courtesy have won for him the respect of the staff and the confidence and esteem of bis patients. All alike felt that in him they had a'man who was ever accessible, and from whom they would receive a sympathetic hearing ana a fair treatment. In severing his' connection with the board, Dr. Smith carries with him the .best wishes of tin members jfor a long and successful career in the, profession to which4ie has devoted his life, and of which he is so distinguished" a member." The appointment of Mr. H. 6. Poynter to be deputy-registrar of marriages at Pongaroa is gazetted. Among t'ho passengers by the mail train from Napier yesterday morning for Wellington were: Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Nathan and Miss Nathan, of Wellington, Miss Maddison, of Hastings, Mr. Overton, of Mafaekakaho, and Mr* T. A. Harper, of Wellington.
