MASTERTON.
The enthusiasm displayed by the ladies of this district in the patriotic cause has been remarkable. When the Lady Liverpool appeal was made they organised, and succeeded in raising over £1000 towards equipping the Expeditionary Force. Not only did they do this, but they worked night and day (Sundays included) to prepare equipment. They have now determined upon sending a consignment of clothing for tho poor of England and Belgium, and a party of ladies was this morning to be seen sorting out case after case of clothing that had been geneiously contributed, mending and darning, and preparing the goods generally for transport. In tho pockets of one little coat were found a large quantity of stamps, which some energetic young philatelist hoped, no doubt, would bring joy to the heart of a child in England. Lambing is nqw well advanced in tho Masterton district. Tho percentage is reported to bo generally good, though it varies considerably. Mr. Henry_ Saint-George conducted the examinations yesterday in connection with tho Trinity College of Music. In the evening he gave a recital under the auspices_ of the Mastorton Professional Musicians' Association. At a sitting of the Native Appellate Court to-day, before Chief Judge Palmer and Judge M'Cormack, several appeals ivere heard and dealt with. Major Norton and Mr. .TV. D. Lysnar. .'of the Bristol and Dominions' Producers' Association, were in Masterton on Tuesday. Ch;er £1000 has been subscribed locally towards the relief of distress arising from, the war. A sports meeting, football match, and_ numerous entertainments aro also being organised in aid of tho fund.
