GRIM FATE OF A GERMAN SUBMARINE PATHFINDER AVENGED London, September 15. The '(Scotsman" reports that the German submarine which sank tho Pathfinder was also sent to tho bottom during her fifty hours' run for safety through four hundred miles of sea patrolled by British ships. The latter were immediately informed of the Pathfinder's fate. When tho submarine was detected she dived again
and again to prevent the destruction of her periscope. The cruisers waited grimly, and when the submarine finally showed her con-ning-tower seven ships wero within range. Ten seconds later seven shots smashed into tho frail shell, which sank within a minute. CERMAN CRUISER SUNK,' BY A BRITISH SUBMARINE. London, September 15. Official from Berlin.—A torpedo from a British submarine sank tho German cruiser Hela, a protected cruiser, built in 1895, refitted in 1910, and armed with four loi-poundefs, six 6-pounders, and two machine guns, with three torpedo tubes. _ . The majority of the crew were saved.
GERMAN BALTIC FLEET IN ACTION. FIFTEEN VESSELS ENGAGED. (Reo. September 16, 7.30 p.m.) Rome, September 15. An official message from Berlin states that fifteen vessels of the German Baltio fleet wero in action on Monday. AUSTRIA'S NAVAL BASE. POLA HEAVILY FORTIFIED. (Rec, September 17, 0.15 a.m.) Rome, Sept-ember 16, morning. The Germans have provided Pola,the Austrian naval base, on the Adriatic, with heavy howitzers and many modern guns. Pola is also defended with live wires on the land and floating mines on the sea, the defenders numbering 150,'000. The Austrian fleet leaves Pola daily, but remains under cover of the forts.
