MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Jlr. L. Bobertson, chief officer of tlio Katoo, has come ashore, and Mr. Hughon has tilled the vacancy. Mr. S. Ewan, lato purser of the Kakapo, wlio arrived in Wellington by the Manuka, from Sydney yesterday, has gone to Dunedin for orders. Mr. Smith, late purser of the Atun, and Mr. Norman, late purser of the Wakatipu, who arrived from Sydney by the Manuka yesterday, have been granted throe weeks' holiday. The steamer Invertay, which came to New Zealand with cargo shipped at Liverpool on behalf of the P. and S. Line, will load homeward cargo in Australia on behalf of that line. She will begin loading at Townsvillo and work south, completing at Sydney. Sho will leave the latter port direct for London some time next month. Information has been received in Wellington to-the effect that tho now cargo steamer Woolgar was successfully launched from Messrs. Swan, Hunter, Winghan, Richardson yards, Ncwcastlc-on-Tyne, on Septenibor 7. Tho vessel is built to the order of tho Melbourne Stoam Ship Company. The Manuka, which arrived at Wellington from Melbourne and Sydney yesterday afternoon, experienced ■ fine weather throughout the run across the Ta6m'an Sea. She will proceed on to Lyttelton this afternoon and will return here on Friday morning, departing from Wellington for Sydney and Melbourne at 5 p.m. on Friday. Captain Bollens, of the Government steamer Hinemoa, has advised the Marine Department that the vessel arrived at Manukau from Puto yesterday. Sho will be engaged in overhauling the buoys in Kaipara Harbour to-day and will then come on to Wellington, calling at The Brothers en route. Tho Hinemoa should reach port early on Friday morning. Tho Union Company's cargo steamer Waitemata is loading transhipments from the Eangatua at Sydney for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. She is expected to sail this week. _ According to cable advices the F. and S. liner Dorset arrived at London on Septem- 1 ber 5 from Australian porte. Another Australasian trader, the Commonwealth and Dominion liner Mimiro, has arrived Home safely. She loaded at Brisbane and Sydney, and according to cable advices, arrived at London "on September 7. After discharging inward cargo, tho Mimiro will go to Now York, and there load on behalf of the United Tyser Line. Owing to the continued dislocation of the usual weekly service between Melbourne and Hobart, on. account of the withdrawal of steamers engaged in the New Zealand-Mel-bourne service, the Union S.team Ship Company have made arrangements for the cargo steamer Koonya to convey cargo from Melbourne to Hobart. The Koonya wiU be the next vessel after the steamer Wainui to take cargo from Hobart to Melbourne. A record has been > established for the port of Onehunga by the arrival there of the Union Comnany's Kaiapoi (2C03 tons) from Westport last Sunday. The vessel is the largest which has yet entered the port. As the Ripple will.lay up at Wellington next week for overhaul and survey, the steamers Koutunni and Kahu will maintain the cargo service between Wellington, Napier, and Gisborno. The light-6hip at the Bluff, has been removed for overhaul, and its place has been taken by a conical black buoy. Tho Oorinna, which is duo to arrive from the south to-day, will be dispatched to A'elson, New Plymouth, and Onehunga this afternoon. Arrangements have been mod© for the vessel to brini the first of the season's butter from Onehunga and New Plymouth to Wellington for transhipment to the Kemncva for London. The Corinna is expected to arrive- at Wellington from the above-mentioned ports on September 23, and will fail the same day for'the south. Tho Union Comnany's steamer Arahwra has been detained at Groyrc.-mth by bad weather. She was to have left that port for Wc=tport at 3 p.m. yp=teT&iy. She will depart for Ncton, Picton, and Wellington at 7 a.m. to-day. and is riot duo here till to-morrow morning. She will leave for Picton at 12.J5 p.m. to-morrow as usual.
