SUPPORT EMPIRE INDUSTRIES
Sir,—The presence of a common danger has again shown that the Empire is one and indivisible. Local differences' aro forgotten, and unitedly we are assisting in tho overthrow of German military despotism, and in the emancipation of the world .from the ■ "heel clicking" type of civilisation. ! v Throughout the Dominions spontaneous- effort is. being made by sending forth well-equipped forces, and by pro-, viding funds for the alleviation of suffering. -Non-combatants' may very effectively contribute-to Imperial defence in another way, viz.: by giving preferential support to tho industries . and commerce of the Empire. As Trade Commissioners of the Mother Country,, and of two of the sister. Dominions, we desire to associate ourselves with tho opinions recently expressed by Sir George E. Foster, Canadian Minister of Trade' and Commerce, by' urging -on consumers the vital importance of buying and using goods manufactured within tho Empire, which is fully capable of supplying our needs. In particular, the women of tho Commonwealth who are so nobly responding to the call of patriotism can do much to aid Empire industries by insisting that their purchases for the daily needs Of our homes shall be of goods manufactured within the bounds of the En> pire, wherever possible. In this way employment will be provided for- "those of our own house," and some offset obtained for'the-economic ravages of war. —We are, etc., . (Signed) G. T. MILNE, British Trade Commissioner. (Signed) D. H. ROSS; / Canadian Trade Commissioner. (Signed) H. J. MANSON, N.Z. Trade Commissioner. Melbourne, September 10,-1914.:
