THE "VALLEY OF DEATH"
* ■ GRIM FIGHT IN A WQODED GORGE BETWEEN RUSSIANS AND AUSTRIANS (Rec. September 15, 9.20 p.m.) • Petrograd, September 14. A wounded Russian officer from the light south of Zamosc, south of Lublin, describes an attack on 15,000 Austriaus,
who wero concentrated mostly in a deeply-wooded gorge. The Russians shelled the gorge, their shrapnel bursting with marvellous accuracy; then the infantry stormed the position, though badly cut up' by' the Austrian guns. Another party of infantry stormed from the ■flank, and the Austrians surrendered almost immediately. The gorge was filled with the <read, who were lying in heaps on the slopes. The Russians named it the "Valley of Death." The Austrian General commanding the division watched his men being disarmed, and presently the Austrian 1 standard was brought from the gorge, unci the general then drew bis revolver and committed suicide.
