——« — — — RELIEF LEGISLATION' PROMISED. The position of the gum-diggers on the northern gumfields and tho proposals of the Government in regard to them were again referred to in the House last evening by Mr. V. H. Reed (Bay of Islands). Ho-asked whether tho Prime 'Minister was yet .able to announce what the Government intends to do. ■ ' Mr. Massey said that, since he made his last statement ,o'n the subject he ihad asked Mr. Greville, the Gum Commissioner, to come to .Wellington. He had had several conferences with Mr. Greville, the Minister of Finance being present on one occasion. An agreement as to what should be done had been practically arrived at, and it had been sanctioned by tho Cabinet. Tho proposals would require legislation, and a Bill had been, drafted to give effect to tthom. All that he could say at present was that the Government had agreed to do all that was possible to tichvthe gum industry over the present crisis.
