i —♦ The Pahiatua Progressive Association has received a reply from the Postmas-ter-General (Hon. 11. H. Rhodes) relative to tlie purcha.se of a sit© in Main Street, next the . Bank of New South Wales, for a, new post office. Owing to the abnormal conditions existing, it has been decided to hold tho matter over for tho present. ' The members of the Kaitawa Morristube Club still continue to take a keen interest in the competitions. Two contests are now hold every week. At the last, "shoot" Messrs. d. and M. Stevenson each scored GO out of the possible 70. The firit match for a trophy presented by the Kaitawa Ladies' Miniature .Rifle Club was won by Mr. D. S. Ross. The Pahiatua Defence Rifle Club will open the season on Wednesday, when a snapshooting and casualty competition will be held. Owing to tho increased interest being taken m the club by town and country residents owing to the European War,'it is expected that the season will be a vevy successful one. The Mayor, Mr. J. D. C. Crewe, visited Wellington last week in connection with the floating of the loan of £10,000 for the electric light and'power scheme for the Pahiatua Borough. Although none of the financial institutions interviewed would commit themselves, the Mayor expressed'satisfaction with his' visit. The directors of tho Pahiatua-Akitio Motor Company are considering a proposal to run the Pongaroa-I'ahiatua mail service by- means of three coaching stages aiid to take the motor vehicle off the road, as, owing to the war, it is not expected that tho Government will bo able to make a grant to assist with the main road maintenance between Pahiatua' and Pongaroa. Portion of the road between Makuri and Pongaroa is at tlie present time in a very bad state of repair. A young Native named Bernard T. Walden was sentenced to two months' imprisonment with hard labour at the Pahiatua Magistrate's Court on Friday, for obtaining from Herbert Pearcey, of. Pahiatua, £2 2s. in cash and meals to the value of Bs., by means of .a valueless cheque. On- the previous day accused was sentenced to one month's imprisonment at Carterton for 'theft.. The death occurred at Makomako last Week of Mr. William E. Angrove. Tho deceased had reached the age of 67 years. The Woodville County Council de- • cided at its meeting this month to prosecute inquiries relative to tho widening of the Manawatu Gorge Road. It was stated that the road in some portions was certainly dangerous, parts being only 10ft. 6in. in width. 'Councillor J. H. Escott suggested widening the road in the narrow places and also making provision for an accommodation paddock for stock.- It was decided to widen the road in the narrow portions to a width of 16ft.
