One has a great deal of sympathy, says an Australian writer, with tie light-hearted daring of the French airman who soared but over Brussels, and, in. spite of ineffectual German attempts to bring him 'down, circled, the city, dropping hundreds of reassuring messages. So much any bravo and skilled man might have done, but the conclusion is entirely Frenoh, and entirely delightful. One can imagine the vociferous but ineffectual fury of the German officers, their heads bent back near suffooation • point, as they followed their aerial visitor's clever exhibition of upside-down flying, and roared out orders to their 'cannoneers.' To some the whole business may sound foolish and unnecessary. Perhaps it was unnecessary; perhaps upside-down flying is never exactly necessary. And yet many will feol that the existence of the devil-may-care mocking spirit typified by this sort of thing is in its way very fine. It reminds one, somehow, of the pinch of snuff, the polite and smiling bow, the dainty curtsey of the old French nobilitj; when they met at thoplaceof execution in the morning.
