• ABANDONED

CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP. Among the correspondence read at the meeting of:the ,; New Zealand Amateur Athletio Association last night wero- several letters in reference to the cross-country ohatnpiohship of tho Dominion,,which had been set down for decision at Christchurch during the present month. The first was from the Canterbury Centre, dated August 18, and read as follows:—"At a meeting of the Canterbury, pentro. held last evening it wa.9 unanimously decided to consult the council in\Tefer«nso to abandoning the cross-country championships to be run here in September. In view of the fact that such large numbers of athletes have volunteered for service with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, also the necessary expenditure that would be entailed; by competitors, iiv centre considered that it would be in the best interests of all concerned if the event was abandoned for 1914. I have written centres"interested as a matter of courtesy, but trust you will finally decide this matter. Please treat this letter as'urgent.—(Sgd.)D. Macdonald Robertson,' hon. secretary." Mr. J..C. Cusack, «eoretary of the council, reported that it had not beenpossible to place tho letter beforo a meeting, and ho had referred it to the chairman (Mr. A. Marryatt). The latter had agreed to the fixture being abandoned, and the various centres had immediately been advised. A protest against the dropping of the meeting had subsequently been received fromOtag\ : Mr. Marryatt said that as there had been no time to place the matter before the council, he had, without ,tho slightest i hesitation, consented to the abandonment of the fixture. The holding of the event would have put both competitors and the public to & good deal of expense, and- he felt very etrongly that at a : time, like this such an expense in connection with.athletics should not be encouraged, unless for the of the Patriotic Fund. .Moreover, on account of the fact that many of the best athletes would bo away on active service, the race would bo robbed of a gaod deal of its usual interest. While on tho subject ho would like to say that he was, very pleased as president of the council to learn that so many of our athletes had volunteered fqr the front. It spoke volumes for the sport that they could Gupply Ro many men, whose training would fit them for enduring the hardships which might lie beforo them. After brief discussion tho action taken by the chairman and tho scoretary was approved by the meeting.
