TWO GREAT BATTLES RAGING.

• .—- .-,■:■ , '• GERMAN RIGHT HARD HIT . .IN FRANCE. SOUTHERN ARMY CAUGHT IN .. A VICE .•'.. REINFORCEMENTS HURRYING FROM ■ ' . .BELGIUM.- ... : ARMY- i DESPERATE PLIGHT. ~ ■' ■■■'■ .' i .. 70,000' INDIAN TROOPS IN- ■ . ENGLAND ARMED MERCHANT CRUISER LOST. .'- ' WRECK OP THE OCEANIC > Taking aline through' the cabled reports from the theatres of the 'European War a it seeme clear that the development of the stupendous operations by the Allied Armies in France is orippling the strategy ' pf the Germans. Thei vigorous offensive by the Allies' left, is keeping the German right wing on tho retreat, while the enemy's southern, armies caught in a vice by Frenoh armies* operating from the .'north- ,• eagt of Paris oi4 pouring into the flat country to the south, where they have been blocked by another Frenob army. The enemy's supply of ammunition and other necessaries, coupled with the' exhaustion produced by the strenuous advance, from the frontier towards Paris, i&. 1 paid to have enfeebled the vigour of their oountar-attacks; guns and • other impedimenta are being left on tho road, and the whole German movement, particularly on their Tight, seems to indicate a desire to reaoh as soon as possible somo line of vantago; where reinforcet nionts may enable them to contest the Allies' advance. We are told that it'is yet too soon to anticipate the final result, but the auspices under which the Allies are now steadily press- . ing onward are in.every way satisfactory. Gorman reinforcements, in Jarge numbers are being rapidly hurried uoross the Belgian-frontier to the assistance of the right wing. Miles away, on tihe other side of 'Austria, a great battle is raging between the Russians and Austria's seebnd army, which is threatened by an enveloping movement by the , /, Russians, whose success seems certain. The Russian successes in GaJicia, and the immense battle-front which is gradually'being built up in tihe Austra-German frontier, have made havoc of the German plans for the campaign in Eastern Germany, and in the words of "The Times" correspondent at Petrograd, the Germans must now dance to the Allies' lune. From London comes the news that Britain's Indian\ 'Army of 70,000 has arrived—the vanguard of the- Empire's' Expeditionary strength from the great Oversea Dominions. From the North Sea comes the report of tho wreck off the north of Scotland of'the ' big White Star linor Ocoanio, flying the flag of the Royal Navy in her new lole as an armedmerchant cruiser. The British Secretary of State for the Colonies has forwarded for our information a summary of the results of the first month of the war, a review, on the whole, whioh must' reassure the whole Empire. ,
