A NEW BOOK ON NEW ZEALAND
BY MR. SOMERSET PLAYNE, F.R.G.S. • ■ . There has just been issued a history of the commerce, industry, ' and resources of New Zealand. A copy received at this office shows the publication to be. very , well got. tfp and profusely illustrated. The work was compiled by Mr. Somerset Playne, P.R.G.S., assisted by Messrs. J. \Y. Bond and H- EL F. Stockloy, F.R.G.S., and was edited by Mr. F. Holderness Gale. It has just been issued by Messrs. Unwin Bros., Ltd., London, and tlio pricc is 255. per copy. In a letter, Mr. Playne states that tho .work is on'e of a series dealing with outlying portions of the i/mpire, and it follows volumes referring to British East Africa, and Uganda,' Cape Colony, and the Orange Free State. Its general purpose is to give' a complete literary and pictorial survey of tho commercial, industrial, and' agricultural resources of the country, together with an account of the notable physical feai tures and the social life. Mr. Playne says that special pains were taken to ensure that tho compilation would be exhaustive in every particular. To this end the compiler and his representatives spent fifteen months in New Zealand, travelling mostly per motor-bicycle. Iho portion of the work dealing with the Maori race is written by Mr. James Cowan,-a very well-known authority on the aboriginal inhabitants of this land. The subject of climate 1 and rainfall is interestingly treated by the Rev. D. C. Bates, the New 'Zoaland Meteorologist'. Tho director of tho Tourist Department, Mr. B. M. "Wilson, contributes a survey and a description of the health resorts and the tourist routes of the country, both of which reveal an intimate knowledge of the subjects. This is only to be expected, of course, from one so well versed in all matters pertaining to the beauty spots and the scenic wilds of the Dominion'. Farmers will observe with pleasure that "The Dairying Industry" was entrusted to Mr: Arthur Morton, of Egmont Village. Mr. Morton is one of the bestknown of Taranaki's leading farmers, and he is the chairman .of the' National Dairy Association. The New Zealand Cl.ydesdale Horso Society supplies interesting notes on the breeding of horses in this country; and the fauna of New Zealand are treated by Mr. Edgar R. Waito, F.L.S., the curator of the Canterbury Museum. That painstaking and valuable officer of the Agricultural Department, Dr. A. H. Cockayne, the State Biologist, is responsible for an article on "Grasses"; and Mr. W. R. Jourdain, of tho Lands and Survey Department, deals with "Fores-' try," while Mr. L. F. Ayson covers the subject of "Fisheries." Much additional information ia contained in the volume.
