THE FIGHT AT COMPIEGNE
BRITISH RESIST LARGE FORCE HEAVY GERMAN LOSSES' (Red. September 8, 0.45 a.m.) . Paris* September 7. The British success at the Forest of Compiegne i operation was of considerable magnitudo, involving the employ-, mcnt of a large forco of artillery. A great number of Germans were concealed in the forest, and the British artillerymen assumed positions around the outskirts. Part of the forest was nest fired, the flames driving out the Germans. The latter were exposed .to.a terrible and effective fire from the British guns. Their losses were extremely heavy.
