ADVANCE PARTY RAN VERY SERIOUS RISK,
(By Telegrapli.—Special Corre6pondent.) Palmerston North, September 6. Voting was proceeding all day Saturday at the Awapuui camp by virtue of the newly-passed Act, and military training was consequently. less • ostensive than on other days. The latest guess at the cause of tlio cancellation of the Battery's departure to Wellington early this week is that it is intended to secure two moie guns from other towns and turn the present battery and sis guns into two batteries of four each. (By Telegrapli.—Press AesoolaMon.) Christchurch, September 6. A send-off to the Canterbury section of the Expeditionary Force at the King Edward Barrack 9on Saturday night took the form of a smoke concert. The members-of the force attended in large numbers, and niariy ladies were present. The Mayor presided. The Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition -were present, also' many leading citizens. Mr. Massey received a great reception on rising to speak. In the course of an eloquent patriotic speech Mr. Massey said:— "I want to remind you of the bloodless victory of the first section, of the Expeditionary Force. Don't imagine that they ran no riek or no . danger. I speak of what I know, and say that they ran a very serious risk. I want to give credit where it is due, and if it had not been for tlie assistance of the Australian Government and the Navy, and the Navy'of one of our allies,. the first section would never have been allowed to reach Samoa. Some day the history of what has taken place will be written, and then you will understand what I am telling ' you. I -want you to lemember this— the first soldiers of the Empire to haul down a German flag and re- ' place it with a British flag were your fellow-soldiers and fellowcitizens. (Great and continued applause.) _It ia a good omen—an omen which will prove to be right. I am certain of this. Though we are going to have reverses and successes I haven't the slightest doubt of the • ultimate result. (Applause.) Sir Joseph Ward also made a stirring .patriotio speech." The Mayor presented Colonel Chaffey with a flag by the citizens. Saturday was i eleotion day at Addington camp, but the men appeared to take very little interest in tne voting. The camp was visited during the day by the Prime Minister and by the Hon. R. Heaton Rhodes. Other Parliamentary visitors were Sir Joseph Ward and Messrs. G. W. Russell and L. M. Isitt, M.P.'s. The visitors were entertained at lunch by the officers of the infantry i-egimenv. ;
