EMPLOYMENT BETTER THAN CHARITY —__ i London, September 4. . Her Majesty the. Queen's 'belief is that prevention of distress is better than relief, , and employment better than charity. Her Majesty has inaugurated a "Queen's Work for .Women Fund," to secure funds wherewith women will be provided with employment. Lady Grewe has been elected chairwoman, and Mesdames Asquith and Austen Chamberlain, and Lady' Bryce,' Lady Derby, and Lady Uchester are assisting- .' , ' ■ "'• The money, raised will bo spent on schemes devised by the central committee for women's employment. The commercial advisers include many of the leading business men. The King and Queen received an ovation while visiting three hundred wounded soldiers in the London Hospital. PRINCE OP WALES'S FUND. (Reo. September 6, 5.15 p.m.) London, September 4, evening. The Prince of Wales's Fund has reached a total of £2,189,000, including Glasgow's £100,000. The American Women's .Fund for the British Red Cross Hospital totals over £21,000. TAX ON THE UNMARRIED. Perth, September 6. At a meeting of citizens to consider' means for averting distress arising out of the war, the Mayor proposed a poll tax of £2 on bachelors, £1 on married men, and 10s. on spinsters. The committee is considering the proposal.
