SAILORS' FRIEND SOCIETY.
The' Sailors' Friend Society Institute was again. Crowded Jast evening-with the crews- of:the troopships : and merchant vessels,, when the Misses Thane provid--ed a concert. Mr. r James Moore,'Missioner, occupied the chair. ■ The following contributed vocal and elocutionary items to the programme: —Miseos Kirk, N. Thane, E. Thane, Messrs. White, Davey, and Oldham. . Miss Kirk played the accompaniments.. A concertina- solo was given by Mr. Lewis Joiie3 (H.M. N.Z.T. No.; 7). The competitions, caused a. good deal of merriment, a large, number of men entering into them. A mouth organ .contest was held, .a.saiJor from H.M.N.Z.T. No. 2, winning tho first prize, and Mr.. F. • Jones (H.M. N.Z.T.,No. 10) was awarded the prize in the pianoforte solo.' A large number of "ditty bags" and books were distributed to the troopship crews. During tho evening Mrs. Moore,' on behalf of .Mrs. M. A. Williams, unfurled the society's now flag amidst the cheors of the sailors present. The fiag bears the :,words: "Tho Sailors'. Friend Society," and line an anchor in one corner. The performers were accorded a hearty vote of thanks at'the conclusion of the concert, and wore aftorwards dispensed. The Missioner desires to thank the donors of "ditty bags" and reading material, who have enabled the mission to distributo a very liberal supply to the troopship crews.
