EFFORTS IN OTHER CENTRES. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) New Plymouth, September 4. A very largely-attended . meeting of local railway men to-night decided to establish a patriotic fund for the relief of distress generally, and not merely to be confined to railway men. The executives of the various railway societies throughout the Dominion are to be urged, to combine and "make the appeal general. A .suggestion will be made to the executive to ask all- members of the _service to contribute a. minimum of sixpence per -week during the continuation.of the war. All' present agreed to enrol as a railway unit of the defence rifle clubs. The Masterton War Relief Fund now amounts to about £1000. A Press Association message from Timaru states that the local British and Belgian relief fund aow totals over £1600. Chrlstchurch, September 4. i All offerings on Sunday, October 4, in Anglican and all other churches, excepting tho Roman Catholic (in which collections will be taken up on tho last Sunday in Octobor), are to bo donated throughout .Now Zealand to the fund for the benefit of the poor of Great Britain, Ireland, and Belgium. It is hoped that at every service on that day generous offerings will be given. "Violet pay" to-day, in aid of the food for Britain and Belgium fund, realised the handsome total of £489.
