RAILWAY MOTOR-CARS
NEW, ENGINE NOT STRONG ENOUGH. . . Tho petrol electric rail motor-car now running to Jolrasonville is referred, to by the General Manager of Railways in his report presented to the House' of Representatives yesterday:— "A pcfcrol-clectric rail-motor-oar was delivered and put into traffic on July 1," says Mr. Hiley, "sir#s which date it lias been conveying , passengers regularly between Thorndon and Johnsonville. No fault can be. found with tho cngino supplied, it being to the power specified when this order was given in November, 1912, but the power developed is not sufficient for hauling the suburban' traffic satisfactorily up tho sovoro grades encountered in the neighbourhood of Wellington, Auckland, or Dunedin. Undoubtedly rail-motors aro the most convenient form of vehicle for dealing with suburban business, except at rush hours, and with a viow to extending tlicir uso inquiries are now being made to ascertain whether suitablb potrol-electric engines can be built, within the limits of our narrow gauge, of sufficient power to haul two large oars with, passengers at a reasonablo speed and economically up the grades such as those outside Wellington or Auckland."
