CITY BURGLARIES

ACCUSED PLEADS GUILTY

After a number of remands, eight chargos of breaking and entering various places in the City, wore taken against James Gillhain in' tho Magistrate's Court yesterday,' before Mr. W. G.. lliddolJ, S.M. On tho application of Chief Detective Hroberg another diargo was added: that on June 16 last accused broke and entered the house of Walter Launder, 26 OMro Koa<l, and stole, therefrom property valued at £13 15s. As accused offered no objection all the charges wero taken together.' Formal evidence was taken rrom the owners of the various houses concerned. In most cases entrance had evidently been made by a. window, and the upstairs rooms had been ransacked. ■ Detective Lewis said that on August 11 Detective Andrew's and himself interviewed accused in reforenco to certain offences of house-breaking at Wellington. The accused admitted that ho had committed the offences, but being a, stranger in tho town ho was uuablo to find the names of the streets in which tho olfeuces had been committed. A.quantity of the lost jewellery wae discovered. in an out-house in Holloway Road* the premises where accused was living. In consequence of what accused then told them a quantity of jewellery from Wariganui and also a ring, revolver and cartridges, which he said he had sold to different people in Wellington) were recovered. \Vhon accused was arrested he had on him £3 2e. <id., a portion of the amount of £4 which ho had received from the sal© of the revolver, the property, of Mr. Woods. A list was then produced by witness, of tho different property stoleiij but not recoyercdi Accused pleaded guilty to each of tho charges and Wais committed to tho Supreme Court for sentence.

SALE OF A MOTOR-CAR. A young man named Leslie Walker was charged that on May li), at Levin, lib received tho sum of £146 from G. IL Scott, on terms requiring him to account for. the same, aud that he had fraudulently omitted to 'account for £120 of tho. money, thereby committing theft. ' ' The evidence of. George Heseltmo Scott, motor importer,' of 59 Cuba Street, and of O'haa. E. Anderson, pleaded guilty to the charge, and was committed to .the Su preiuo Court for sentence.

IN BAD COMPANY. Ernest Jones and Patrick Joseph O'Connor, two young men, appealed on remand charged with the thoit of jewellery, valued at £0. 65., from the Terminus Hotel. Kvideiico was given by Constable Rollington and Ellen M'Cann, from whom tho articles wero alleged to- liavo been etolen. Both accused pleaded guilty to tho charges and wore committed td tlio Supreme Court for sentence. O'Connor was further charged with the tlieffc of a watch, and chain, valued at 10s. from Henaro Parata, and of other goods valued at £3 from Bell Waka,' and a cha »o was preferred against Jones of recoiving a portion of the property, mentioned. ■ Both'-pleaded guilty, to the charges. Chief Detective Broberg stated that up to the present Jones ■. had borne a pood character. . On the other hand O'Connor had been already con cted for theft at Auckland and ClirisHirrch. As the result of tlio latter charge accused was at present serving a sentence of three nlcnths' gaol. ; : The former was • sentenced to one month's imprisonment and Jones ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. ;'

FORGED TELEGRAM. ■\Villiam_ Joseph O'Dwyor was charged with forging the liarao of J. .W. S. Peiinefather to b. telegram, and of having received a money order telegram for £5 for tho same. According to n statement made to Detective Bailey, accused had met Pennefather, jun., in Wellington, and the latter had told him that his father was inspector of poisons at Brisbane. Accused had taken advantage of the information and.had cabled for a few pounds. Accused had received £5 by money order telegram and had acknowledged for the same in j> W. S, Pen* "uei'athdr'e name. A plea of guilty was entered and accused committed to the Suprcnlo Court for sentence. ' ,

OTHER OASES. ITredk; Thompson was charged with the theft of two drinking glasses from the Imperial Hotel, and with using obscene language. On the first ohnrgo accused was fined 10a. or 48 hours', with costs, and on the second, "lie was fined £3 or 14 days' imprisonment. Lilian Jukes, well known to tile Court, was called on.a charge of drunkenness. She is in an insane condition in' tho celts, reported. Inspector Hendrey, whereupon the accused was- remanded to September 9. • Albert Saumlers, alias Burke, was fined 55., to , 24 hours, for drunkenness and remanded for sentence to September 7 on a charge of stealing two blaiikets valued at Bs., from Lottie Saunders. . For drunkenness Timothy Donovan was fined £2 or 14 days, while Peter Mickeken and Marian ftl'Loughlin were I each fined '10s. or 43 hours.- The latter, an old ago pensioner, was ordered' to have a prohibition order taken out against her. Three first offenders were dealt with.
