GREAT RUSSIAN YICTORY
APPALLING SLAUGHTER OF AUSTRIANS
' From the pen of Mr. Martin Donohoe, the brilliant and resourceful war correspondent for the London "Daily Chronicle," comes a thrillv ing account of a great battle which, commencing on Sunday, raged with' terrific fury slong a line apparently from Amiens towards the French ring fortress.of La Fere. The German Army, in a desperate effort to ibreak the Allied line along that front, hurled their massed cattle-like battalions upon the British line, which bore the brunt of the attack liko a solid wall, against which the fury of the Germans spent itself with appalling losses. ] The attack was renewed, and the British line, after again inflicting terrible punishment, withdrew to its next line of defence, a manoeuvre according with the general scheme to draw the Germane as far into hostile'territory, as possible before the Allied counterstroke is delivered. <The Franco-British line is stifl unbroken, while the Frenjb, after a sustained resistance, ~'• costly; to the Germans, have vigorously counter-attacked. This desperate encounter !haa jnot been without Joss to t!he Allies,; but the casualty roll palea"\ before 'the huge losses of the Germans, {Indications point to an important movement of British troops from : Ostend, and this; read , in conjunction with the reported fortifying of . Brussels by the Germans, and the activity of the enemy's transport perviceln Belgium, suggests a development to harass the enemy'e Operations from the rear. The recent battle in Galioia is'stated to have resulted in. the overwhelming defeat of the Austrians by the Russians, with huge losses. Disaffection is rife in the Austrian Army, and: according to acoounta whole regiments with their officere are crossing over to Hhe Russians. The French aviators have been showing great activity in offensive operations against the enemy's overhead raiders, and sharp reprisals have followed the bomb-dropping exploits of the German airmen, who have appeared abore Paris. In the Balkans, the atmosphere, pregnant with military possibilities, is . still simmering, but there are no fresh developments.
