• His Honour Mr. Justice Stringer returns from Auckland to-day, _ Mr, E. Newman, M.P., took his seat iq the House of Representatives last night for. the first time since his return from his trip abroad. ..•. • General regret will be expressed at the news of ttoe death at New Plymouth of Mr. John H. Hempton, Collector of Customs at New Plymouth, and some twenty-five years ago a very brilliant athlote. At one time Hompton held the world's running record for the 100 yards (9 3-ssec), which time ho was accredited with putting up both in New Zealand and in England (which coim-i try he visited as a member of the first athletic team to be sent Homo from New Zealand). Mr. Hempton_ was the son of'the late Captain Hempton, and was born in New Zealand fifty-one years ago. Ha entered the Customs Department at Wellington in 1879, and in 1886 was transferred to Auckland. Four years later he was appointed warehousekeeper at Ohristchurch, and from there he went to Invercargill and Napier. At tho beginning of 1892 ho was appointed examining officer at' Wellington, and in 1898 he necajio chief clerk here ; In 1908 he was promoted to the position of Collector of Customs at New Plymouth. Deceased, who was a married man with I one child, had many friends in this city. During his stay here ho was a member of tho Wellington Football Club. _ His death was the result of an accident which he met with on Saturday night, when he was knocked dcivn by a motorcar and had three ribs broken. , Sir Ernest Rutherford, F.R.S., the eminent Now Zealand scientist, who is, Director of the Physical Laboratories of the 'University of Manchester, will arrivo here from Wavorley by the Main Trunk express to-morrow afternoon, and will deliver a. lecture at the Town Hall I the same evening. The following appointments of Salvation Army officers have been officially announced:—Adjutant-Alfred Greene, to special duty; Adjutant James Hughson, to Waimate; Ensign John Copp, to Christohurch district headquarters, special duty: Ensign James Pickering, to Workmen's Home, Wellington; Captain Alfred Kemp, to Dunediu district headquarters, speoial duty; Captain ' Edith Matthews, to Levin (assist); Captain James Hawkins, to Hawera; Captain Daisy Allen, to Tauraarumii (assist); Captain Margaret Erskine, to Rakaia; Captain Thomas Shearer, to Oxford; Lieutenant Martin Brown, to Morrinsville (in charge); Lieutenant Jessie Cairns, to Rakaia; Lieutenant Thomas Shilton, to Geraldine. Ensign James Hughson has been promoted to be adjutant. Mr. G. H. Quilliam, of New Plymcutli, returned from a year'e visit to the Old Country, via Vancouver, by the Niagara. , Mr. Percy W. Jackson has been admitted to partnership in the legal firm of Wilford and Levi. Mr. C. B". Norwood, the very popular and nnich-respectod member or the managing staff of the Wellington Gas Company, has resigned from tha- Dosition to enter into business ;- the managing director of a local wholesale house. Mr. Norwood, who, by the way, is president of the Wellington Industrial Association, has been conneoted with the Gas Company for the past seventeen years, fourteen of which he has been one of the company's trusted managers. In a letter from the directorate, expressing regret at his rotirement, Mr. Norwood's services; to the company are referred to in toTm3 of tho warmest commendation. On hearing of Mr. Norwood's intention to remain in Wellington, tho company offered him a consultative position, which has been accepted, so that ho does not altogether Beyer his connection with the business he has served so faithfully and well. Tho Rev. John. Mackenzie, M.A., of St. Andrew's, Ohristohurch, has received a call to Toorak, Melbourne, the most fashionable Presbyterian Church in Australia. Toorak is Melbourne's wealthiest and most beautiful suburb, and the seat of Government House. It is understood that the call will bo accepted. Another call is from Edendale, Mataura, to tho Rev. John Pringle, M.A., of Kirwee. Both calls will bo considered at the meeting nf tho Presbytery on September 9. —Press Association.
