■ . 9— JOTTINGS FROM PROVINCIAL CENTRES. . (From Our Special Correspondents.) -.. i . MASTERTON.' Twenty-five births, five deaths, and four marriages were registered in Mas'terton during the month of August. The Wellington Farmers' Meat Company had wool and-tallow- on the illfated steamer Kaipara, valued- at £700. This was, however, covered by a war risk. A client of the company had 2COO. carcasses of mutton on the vessel, valued at £2000. The first parade of the Masterton Riflo Defence Club' was held on Monday night. Over two hundred citizens were on parade. Twenty now members were sworn in in addition to a number who had enrolled : during the week. At a meeting of .the committee of .the. Masterton 'Amateur Theatrical Society it was reported that as a result of the performances of "A Country' Girl" in Masterton and r Martinborough, a sum of £100 would be available' for the War Relief Fund. It was decided, to give a final performance in Masterton in aid of the society itself. ■ ' . Farmers are actively employed planting wheat, oats, and other cereals where the land is suitable. . Root crops are, however, not being neglected, for our wiser farmers are of opinion -that stock may have to beheld for a longer period this year than last, owting to the prospect of a shortage in transports.
' ; ptak!.;;,. A very successful concert'was held at Manakau on Monday, in aid of the War Fund. There was. an excellent attendance. Several attractive items were given by, the children,. -who had been specially 'trained by Miss Riddler, while Miss V. Anderson; Messrs. F.-Winter and Crump also contributed songs. Misses Evelyn, Ethel, and 1 Lois Jones scored great successes with their songs and recitations. . Siracos, after 21 years in office, has.resigned as president of the Otalu Lawn Tennis Club. - ' The following have been elected officers of the local Tennis Club:—-Presi-dent, Mr. C. L. Raplev; treasurer, Mr. H. Chamberlain; auditor, Mr. Byron Brown. CARTERTON. At a meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council on Saturday, 'it was decided that the Rua'mahanga . Bridge be sheathed with fine metal and day-, binding and rolled, the same as is done in bridges in the South Island. A man with horse and dray is to be employed to keep the main road in good repair. A. bridge is to be erected on Victoria Road, near the Dalefield Hall. It was decided that the creek on Moreton Road near Mr. Andrews's property be straightened, so as to reduce the amount of.-water .at the fordway. . The bridge on Hhe Carterton-Glad-stone main road, in the Wairarapa South County, known as Sexton's bridge, has i been closed against heavy traffic during the progres of repairs. At a meeting of Totara . Lodge, U.A.0.D., on Monday evening, Bro. w. W. Mansfield was appointed a _ lodge trustee, in place of Bro. C. . Ericksoh, who had resigned. Bro. H. J. M'Keuzie was elected to the office of 1.G., and Bro. W. Webb to the office of A.D.B Bros. C. Rcid, H. M'Kenzie, and E. M'Kenzie were appointed a committee to select teams to compete in the annual Friendly Societies' football tourney. .; ._- ,
