This week's direct boat from Sydney to Wellington!—tho Ulimaroa—which, left the New South Wales port at 4 p.m. on Friday last, will arrive here this morning—one day early. Tho Ulimaroa has 240 passengers and 1400 tons of cargo on board. She will proceed to Lyttelton to-morrow, arriving back hero in time to tako her departure for Sydney at 5 p.m. on' Friday. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Captain R. E. Smith, who had temporary oommand of the Maheno, has taken chargo of tho Wairuna. , Captain Footer, late of the Wairuna, is now master of tho Union Company's chartered steamer Wyandotte. Mr. E. Greenwood, who has been actingengineer of the Blenheim, signed off that vessel's articles at Wellington yesterday. It will be early on Thursday morning before the Karamea arrives at Wellington from Montreal, via Auckland. It is reported that the steamer Courtfleld, which recently visited Wellington, haa been.sold by the Century Shipping Company, Ltd., to the Emprcza National Lino of Lisbon. . .
Messrs Dulgoty and .Co. advise that the Mangapapa will arrive at .Wellington from the West Coast on' Thursday of this week to load for Karamea and Westport. News.has come to hand that tho. ShawSavill steamer Rangatira has been chartered, by the Australian Government to convey troops to England. The vessel was en route from Liverpool to Auckland, Wellington, and Port Chalmers, and she is now at Sydney. 'Her New Zealand cargo will be brought aerobe by intercolonial steamers. > It is probable that the Union Company's Karamu will undergo survey and overhaul at Wellington after sho has put out her coal cargo this week. Tho Invertay will not leave Wellington for southern, ports till' to-morrow. It is announcod that B.M.S. Niagara, will leave Auckland for Sydney at 4 p.m. today. According'to cable advices the s.s. Indralcma, after loading under the auspices of the .American and Australian -Line, left New York on August 24 for Melbourne, Sydney, and New Zealand ports. The Corinna left. Wellington .for the south last evening. Rho will Toturn here on Saturday next to pick up Now Plymouth cargo. The passing of failing ships is emphasised by the following statistics, which show that in IBS 9 tJio world tonnage was represented by 22,402 failing vessels of 9,496,602 net . tons, as- against 10,260 steamers of 7,414,954 net tons, whereas today there are but 6604 sailing vessels of 3,890,936 net tons, as compared witli 23,897 steamers, of: 26,517,029 not tons. An expected arrival at Auckland from Calcutta, via Singapore, Samnrang, and Hobart to-morrow is the Union Company's training ship Apnrima. Tho vessel left llobart. last Thursday.
