When returning- to camp on Sunday evening Trooper Matthew Gallagher, of Sydenham/28 years of nge, fell off a tram-car, and was severely injured. Ho was removed to the Hospital, but died shortly after arriving there. : FATAL FIRE AT BALOLTJTHA. . , Dunsdin, August 31, A four-roomed cottage owned and'occupied by David Smith was destroyed by fire at. Balclutha on Saturday night. Smith received severe burns from which ho died. Two boys who were also in tho 'house managed to escape in their night clothes.. Smith wis 78 years of age. HOSPITAL REPORTS. It was reported from tho Hospital last night that John Phillips, who met with a serious accident in Newtown.on Saturday, was a little easier in condition. C. Trevithick (who was injured at Trentham) was reported to be still unconscious. The little girl Irene Davis, who met with a tram accident at Kilbimie last week, is reported to bo improving.
