The patriotic concert held at Johnson vjlle last Thursday produced £44 10s. The Johnsonvillo Band is organising a social to he held next week in aid of the.War Fund, and a skating carnival, organised by Messrs. Moore Bros., will be hold _ a week following, and 'jho proceeds will be handed over to the same fund. Up till Saturday over f«300 had been subscribed in Taihape to the Empire Defence Fund.

A fund for the poor of Great Britain, Ireland, and Belgium has been started here. At a representative public meeting £625 was given in the room. A coratmttoe and executive were elected to work in conjunction with the National Committee. WELLINGTON CAMPAIGN. SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENTS. _ A meeting of ihe Sports and Entertainments Committee in connection .with ■ the Patriotic. Fund was held in the Town Hall last night. Mr. A. Marryatt presided. The arrangements for the Mayoral and Parliamentary cricket match were announced to be well in hand. Tlie question of the much-discussed Supday concert were left in the hands of sub-committees, with power to oilajge.
The Natives' Association Band and the Wellington Pipe Band write signifying their willingness to help the committee, in its work.
The Department of' Internal Affairs wrote granting permission to the committee to hold a treasure hunt at Lyall Bay. J
It was decided to Tequest citizens to forward articles suitable for the gift auotion to be held by Mr. H. Seaton about, September 9. It was announced that the Mayor intended to declare a half-holiday-for the occasion. In connection with the Basin Rcsorvo function, Mrs. Bott, of Hall Street, and Mrs." Dougkiß, -of Abel Smith Street, wrote offering their services as flower stair keeper, and fortune-teller respectively. . It was announced that the Maori Choir concerts would probably be held next week.- /. A meeting of ladies to assist in'the sale of badges is to be called shortly by Mrs. J. F Luke. On September 9 a marathon race is to be ; held, the finish of which is to her ,'at..'the. Basin.; Reserve.'... v ' ...,.--," ..'.'". - A donation of - flowers was received from Mr. Hurst and friends of Nelson. They realised £3 when so'd by Mrs. Bayfield and her assistants. It is right that we should think of our friends as well as ourselves, especially in' such times, as these. Our sympathies are surely awakened by the terrible sufferings and losses incurred, by gallant little Belgium in resisting bo formidable- a foe, especially as by the surrender of honour Belgium might have gaved the lives of her people and the treasures of her cities. We are further indebted to Belgium for tho sacrifices sho has made, and but for which the position of the Allies to-day would bo oven moro serious. We can never fully ropay those sacrifices, but New Zealanders already havo shown so much generosity that thoy have only to remember the sacrifices and realise tho needs of Belgium and liberal contributions will be forthcoming, without diminishing other funds. I am sorry that my donation must, be small, but such as it is, ploaso accopt the enclosed guinea."
