PAY AND ALLOWANCES. ' In the current week's Gazette is set out in detail financial and allowance regulations that have been made by the Government under the provisions of the Naval Defence Act of last year. The rates of pay and) allowances for commissioned and subordinate officers lent by the Royal Navy aie to be the same »3 are at present obtaining in the Royal Navy, with certain additional emoluments. These consist of Iβ. per day to cover the cost of uniforms, rations in kind or , in lion thereof Iβ. 4d. per day, and medical attendance vahted at 3d. per day. There is also a special lodging allowance for officers not provided with cabin, accommodation or quarters ashore in the following ratio: Captains, 6s. 3d. per day; commanders and lieutenants (over eight years in commission), 55 , .: lieutenants (under eight years), aad sub-lieutenantß, 3s. 9d.: midshipmen, 2s. The pay of warrant officers is divided into "active pay" and ''deferred pay," which together make the total salary for- the year. The pay of the gunner, boatswain, signal boatswain, warrant telegraphist, carpenter, artificer engineer, warrant armourer, mechanician; electrician,, writer, head steward, chief master-at-arnis, and instructor in cookery:—On promotion, £205 6s. 3d. per annum; after two years, £212 18s. 4d.: after four years. £220 10s. sd.j after six years, £228 2s. 6d.; after eight years, £235 14s. 7d.; after ten years, £243 6s. Bd.; after twelve years, £250 18s. od.-: after fourteen years, £258 10s. 10d.
The pay of "chief" gunner, boatswain, signal boatswain, warrant telegraphjst( oarpenter, artificer engineer, commissioned mechanician, and eleotrician:—On promotion, £273 15s. per annum; after two years, £281 7s. Id.; four years, £283 IPs. 2d.; six years, £296 lla. 3d. j eight years, £304 3s. 4d; Lieutenants and officers of equivalent rank promoted from commissioned warr rant rank:—On promotion, £342 3s. 9d. per annum j two years, £365; four years, £387 16s. 3d.; six years, £410 12a. 6d.
The rates of pay for petty offioers, men, and boys, range from 2e. 11 d. per day for a second-class boy seaman to 6s. lid. per day for an able seaman, and 7s. 2d. per day for a leading seaman (rising to 7s. 7d. per day after six years' service). A selection of other rates are as follow: —Stokers, 7s. 4d. per day; bandsmen, 6s. 7d.; sailraakar, b's.; armourer, 95.; petty offioers, from Bs. 2d.; chief petty officers, from 9s. Id. Each manvand boy on first joiningthe Permanent Naval Forces is credited with a clothing gratuity of £9 2s. 6d. in kind. After completion of first twelve months' service an allowance towards cost of uniform at the rate of 6d. per day in kind is credited in arrear on the last day of the quarter to each rating. Petty officers, seamen, and others below the rank of warrant officer may, subject to the approval of the Naval Authority, purchase their discharge on the following terms:—(a) Up to but not exceeding one month from date of first entry, £10 ;'(b) after one month, hut not exceeding three months, from date of first entry, £20; (c) after three months from dai<e of first entry—(i) Bpye under eighteen years of age, £40; (ii) Men— (1; up to three years' service since date of engagement, £48; (2) over three years' and up to six years' service since date of engagement, £36; (3) over six years' service since date of engagement, 'm. ■ '
