FIRE AT OTAKI
BLOCK 01? BUILDINGS DESTROYED. A fire broke out at Otaki at about 3.30 yesterday morning, and demolished a block of buildings in the centre of the town, owned by Mr. Robt. Hannah, of Wellington, and Miv Win. Roxburgh. The outbreak occurred in Yen Guy's fruit shop, and spread rapidly to a vacant shop and a billiard saloon, theuce to Mr. Alex. , M'Cleland's bootmaker's shop, two other small unoccupied premises, and then to Mr. F. A. Bilk's grocer's shop and Messrs. Roxburgh Bros.' tailoring establishment. Elevo the fire was checked by placing galvanised iron alongside the walls of Mr. Waterson's hairdressing shop. Tho Family Hotel, Messrs. Bright Bros:' fine new theatre,-and. Mr: Cnckrell's siiop, on the opposite side of the road, were scorched, and it wns i only by a hand.of willing workers that tlie places were saved.
