NEWS AND NOTES.
SPORTS MATERIAL FOR THE VOYAGE. At a meeting of the Recreation Committee of the locai Patriotic Fund, held recently, Mr. W. Smith proposed that something might be done towards the purchase of sportiug matorial for the use of the troops on the various transports, and on the. suggestion of tlio chairman (Mr. C. P. Skerrett) Mr. Smith and others interested made a special canvas among their friends and hrms dealing in sports material to supply this want; Mr Smith reported yesterday that he and others had collected the sum of £40 from the members of the Pickwick Club and sports bodies, which amount is to bo expended in the purchase of punch-balls, boxing-gloves, deck quoits, and such other material as will at once relieve the tedium of the voyage and aid in keeping the men in good fettle. The thought was distinctly a good one, and Mr. Smith deserves credit for the manner in which he Las followed it up: Salvation Army Chaplain. Adjutant Green, the officer in charge of the Salvation Army Workmen's Home in Buckle Street, is to accompany the ISxpeditionary l'orce abroad as ■ the Army's representative chaplain. Ensign and Mrs. Pickoring, from the Auckland Workman's Home, arrived here yesterday afternoon to.take over the management of the Buckle Street Home. Brigadier Bray, of the Salvation Army, loaves for i'almorston North this morning to deliver a farewell address to tlio Expeditionary' Force,. in the departure of which the Army is taking a lively interest. The Soldiers'/ Vote. The show windows of Stewart, Dawson and Co. becamo a point of attraction' to the hurrying city crowds between 6 and 6 o'clock last evening, by the exhibition! of a ribbon-like scroll of paper," which ' contained' tlio signatures of somo 1250' men of the ExpeditionaryForce now in camp at, Palmerston North, attached to a petition praying that tlioy should not become disfranchised by reason of the fact that they are going abroad to figlit'for the Empire. In' its way the petition is a novelty, 'as there is probably no instance on record where troops, on the eve of leaving their country for servico on the other side of the world, have had a thought for their electoral privileges, and as such tho "prayer" caused a, good deal of comment in l the streets last evening, not so much, perhaps, in contradiction to the claims of the men, but as to how it would be possible to give effect to it, were it deemed advisable to do so. Hint for Embarking Troops. From an authoritative quarter it is suggested that members of tho Expeditionary Force are advised to wear as many clothes as possible when going on board tho transports, even to tlio 'ex--, tent of duplicating or triplicating their garments, ,as well as 'filling their kitbags to their fullest extent with their necessary equipment. It is only when they reach their destination that the regulation outfit will be recognised, and when it is remembered that the troopships will be passing into exceedingly cold weather, the necessity for a plentiful supply of'warm clothing will be easily understood. To wear as'smuch as possible when embarking, and 'shedding what is superfluous afterwards, is what has been suggested' for getting extra things on board. Extra pairs of socks, jerseys, and sweaters, etc., will undoubtedly bo acquisitions—and will be allowed, with other additions that can be discreetly managed. The appearancc of the troops when embarking—if these suggestions be carried out—should be the reverse of willowy.
