His Excellency . the Governor,- Lord Liverpool, lias accepted the position of patron of the iS'eiv Zealand Football Association. The many friends of the Hon. Gilbert Carson, M.L.C., will bo glad to hear that lie has successfully undergone an. operation considered necessary by his medical advisers. Mr. Carson i# in a private hospital in Wanganui. His condition at one timo gave his family very grave anxiety, but he is now making excellent progress to health. The funonil of ,the late Mr. "Wm, iu'lipan took place yesterday mgrning at Karori. • The deceased was the president of the 'Wellington Spiritualists' Association, and tnc sorvice ovor tho graveside was read by Mr. W. C. Nation, of Levin, president of the New Zealand Association of Spiritualists, and Mrs. Harris Roberts. Mr. M'Lean's favourite hymn, "Nearer My God, To Thee," and two other hymns . were sung at' the graveside. Among the many present were the chairman and directors of the Wellington Opera House Company (of which the deceased was secretary). The chief mourners were Messrs. Sydney and Ronald: M'Lean, sons of the deceased. News was received on Wednesday, Bays our Masterton correspondent, of the death at Ballarat of jMr. Herbert H, Welch, son of Mr. R. Ri Welch, of Mas- , terton, who left for Australia some ' Weeks ago on a health-recruiting .trip. The deceased was 47 years of age, and was highly respected in tho district. There was a- large attendance at tho Petona R-oman Catholic Schoolroom on Wednesday evening, the occasion being & send-off to the Rev. Father M'Menamin, who has joined the Expedition-! ary Forces. Mr. A. Coles presided, and Fathers Daley and Quealey were also .present: During the evening the, chairman, on behalf of the Church, presented the guest with a purse of soW eroigns; from the Children of Mary a handsome suit case, from the altar, boys a set of toilet requisites, and from the children of the parish a fountain' pen aiid purse. Prior to leaving for Piilmerston North camp, tho members of the Railway Engineers' Corps for the Expeditionary Force presented Lieut. Hedge with a travelling rug as a mark or appreciation for the courteous and ready manlier in which he dealt with the corps..Mr. \lavid B. Russell has been appointed resident agent on the Island of Atiu (Ooolc Group) for the Governnient. Mr. R. B. Grange, who has been in--Australia for the past three months, • returned to Wellington by the Manuka on Wednesday. Mr. J. Winlove, Mayor, of Waijjukurau, is on a brief visit to Wellington on matters connected with the dispatch of troops from his district .to the seat of/ war. The people of Waipukurau have contributed in a liberal, manner to the several funds atid the residents' response 'lias met with keen approval from the Defence -authorities! Mr.' Winlove is staying at the Pier Hotel during his sojourn in town. - Mr.'R. A. Armstrong, Dominion organiser of tho Moderate League, leftt for Auckland by yesterday's express. Dr. F. Garcia Webster will arrive from Sydney by the s.b.
