MENTAL HOSPITALS

THE ANNUAL REPORT. Last evening tho Minister of Public Health (tho Hon. R. Heaton Rhodes)' presented to the House of 'Representatives the annual report on the mental hospitals of the Dominion. -The report covers the year 1918, and shows that tho'number of patients on tho register at the beginning of the year was 3913 (males 2273, females 1640), and at tho end of the year 3964 (males 2332, females. 1032). G.'he total number under oversight, care, and control was 4805 (males 2816, females 1989), as against 4743 (2813 and 1930) in tho previous year. The average number reident in the institutions during the year was 3849 (2252 and 1597), which was 152 more than in 1912. The number nf Maoris on the register was 39 only. Tho proportion of mental defectives to tho population was one in 286, or 34.94 pw 10,000..' In England and Wales the proportion was 37.4. Respecting the Auckland Mental Hospital; it was reported that during the coming year overcrowding would become a tiling of the past, on tho femalo sido at least. . It was reported that at tho end of the year there wci:o 892 patients in the Porirua Hospital. Thero were 68 deaths there duiing the twelve months.
