That is accounted: for by the fact that the prices throughout the year ruled lower than they did in the previous year. We find changes taking place in the trade. Trade is going out of the. centre of London to the suburbs,: and -. we have. found it siecessaiy to - follow our customers to' acertain extent. To do that effectually we have hecn.nsing motors, ahd'wc find'those' ; satisfactory, inasmuch as they, enable us to.kcep in touch with people that.otherwise wo. should lose. It is probable we shall ■have; to go still further in that, direction. There was only one'particular tiling that created a difficulty during; the past year, and that was a very serious one'., i am alluding to. the strike in. New Zealand. iThat was. a very costly matter to everyone engaged in importing provisions from that part of the.world, and I may say that it has cost your company ' at least from £5000 to £6000. Goods accumulated at the port 3 of shipment for weeks, and when they did arrive here in huge quantities of course they produced a slump in. the market, and' very much- lower prices were obtained than would otherwise have been the case if.the goods had come forward in tho ordinary course. In many instances the cost of the goods in New Zealand and the advances made • "without recourse", were not covered by the prices Tcaliscd here. Before passing from New Zealand, I should like to say a word in commendation of the admirable manner in which the New Zeolandcrs tackled this difficulty. The farmers, factory people, their eons ana employees came down to the ports and loaded the goods themselves. (Hear, hear.) ,But for this I think the losses would have been much more serious."
