THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS

TBr QIENCOB.I ;_ Tlie nominations for the Spring Meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club close on Monday next. At tho same time there is a forfeit due for the next Jackson Stakes. The annual meeting of the Amberley Club will be held on Saturday next. Weights for tho Dannevirke meeting aro due on Friday. After several lengthy sittings the stipendiary stewards in Melbourne decided to take no action in the case of. Darrawa, who scored easily at Moonee Valley when ridden by H. Cairns. His form at the Valley was a considerable improvement on his showing at Caulfield a week previous, hence the inquiry. After, her win in the National Plate, one mile and a quarter, on the opening day of the Queensland meeting, Ventura started at a very short price in tho Denman Plate, a wcight-for-age event, run over a,mile course. The race on the opening' day must have taken full measure of Mr. E. J. Watt's mare, for Bhe finished out of a place. Tho race was won by .the Now Zealand-bred Lord i Burnside (Yasco—lima). ; The Multiform horse, Midnight Sun, won the first prize for blood stallions at the Barcaldine (Queensland) show. . There is no absence in Australia'of persons deeming themselves fit to act as stipendiary stewards. In response to an advertisement recently calling for applications for the position of stipendiary to the Northern Rivers Clubs, no fewer than 110 applications were received. The Auckland-owned Merrimax was a runner in the Jumpers' Flat, one mile, at Gosford (N.S.W.), on August 18, but ,ho could only finish second to Chipponette. In the August Steeplechase at Flemington on August 15, Pladda, ridden by the New Zealander, S. Neary, fell and broke his back. L. Hagerty had the mount'on Statecraft, who also rolled over. Amongst the matrons booked to visit the imported horse White Star, now at Mr. Sol Green's Shipley Stud, is the Yaldhurst-bred Isolt (Multiform—Bellicent), who is now owned by the New South Wales breeder, Mr. John M'Donald. Cherubini is. now trained by C. O'Rourke at Randwick, and not by the ex-New Zealander, T. Dwy'er. ■ The latter trains'the remainder of "Mr. J. Birks's" team. Cherubini is entered for the Pace Welter, six furlongs, at Warwick Farm, on Saturday next. Lotchen, winner of the Metropolitan Handicap, of 1000 sovs., one mile and a half, at the Queensland Turf Club's meeting, on August 12, is a full brother to Parewanui and Thetis The Chokebore-trained Stevedore, who was unable to race on tho second and third days of the Grand National-Meet-ing, as a result of a kick ho received prior to the start of the Winter Cup; is again in light work at Riccarton. Up to date, the following foalings are reported from thof Waikanae Stud:—Sonoma, twins (dead)* to Birkenhead; Cliinwag, twins (dead) to Achilles; Lady Principal; chestnut filly i to Bezonian, foaled Augustill; Satisfaire, bay colt, to Achilles, August 15: Prelude, bay colt (doad), to Achilles, August 16; Mallaig, bay filly, to Birkonhead, August 19; Kilwinnot, bay filly, to Achilles, August 23.. , - All the 'leading stables have representatives ■ engaged in tho Wanganui Guineas, to bo run next month, and on present appearances there is every indication that a better .field numerically than usual will'go-to'the post. One of the latest purchases for Germany\'(says a Sydney writer) is the New Zealand-bred filly Protection,' who is a '.half-sister to that good, horse Broadswordy by Gravitation. Protection was, purchased about 12 months ago by the.. Sydney owner, who races as "Mr. J. Birks," and was trained by the exNew Zealander, T.'Dwycr. It has been suggested locally that any racing clubs that decido to give "the profits of their meetings to the War Fund might increase the. returns considerably "by suspending the issue of complimentary tickets. No one, it is argued, would object to the suspension of tno free list during the present crisis. . ■. ■ The statement has boen published in New Zealand that Mr. Ryan's, horse\ Merrimax could not fulfil his first three engagements in Australia becauso he was not registered thirty days before nomination.. Mr. Cropper, secretary of the' Australian Jockey Club, has; written - " to the Press Association, statirig this, is erroneous, and that he has received several letters and cablegrams from New Zealand about it. "By resolution of his committee, horses entered outside the Commonwealth for any events in connection with his club's meetings are exempt, from registration, and the committee passes such resolution each year.. Mr. Cropper adds that Mr. Ryan evidently confused the question of registration of foals and yearlings. These can be entered, (in tlie'State) without being registered, but be registered thirty days before the date of a raco in which it is intended to. start them. All horses in the Commonwealth must be registered before entry,- but there is no limit of time prior.to entry. Although the registration of New Zealand horses entered with any of tho club's agents there ;is not necessary, it is usual to register them when they come to Australia, as tbey are then eligible to be entered for races at meetings of other club 3 in tho Metropolitan area or anywhere in Australia. "What happened'in the case of Merrimax (says Mr. Cropper) was that he was brought over hero and entered, I believe, .for races with three clubs in : the Metropolitan area without being registered, The consequence was that when it was proposed to start him tihe horse was not registered, and the entry was therefore invalid and had to be rejected."
