RUSSIANS DEFEAT GERMANS IN PRUSSIA
BATTLE AT GUMBINNEN VICTORIOUS ARMY NOW 37 MILES IN GERMANY ■ " London, August 23. The French Embassy states that the Russians defeated three German army corps at Gumbinnen; St. Petersburg, August 23. It is officially stated that in the early stages of the fight at Gumbinnen the Germans attempted an enveloping movement, but later asked for an armistice to bury their dead. This was refused. The' Russians, are now pursuing the Germans, who are' withdrawing from' the frontier at Wittenberg, nine miles in Prussian territory, • and about ninety miles south of Konigsberg., ■ , A Vilna telegram.states that the Russians, after the battle'at Gumbinnen, occupied Insterburg,; a railway junction town with a population of 80,000,' which lies sixteen miles west of' Gumbinnen, and 57 miles from Konigsberg. -Gumbinnen is a town of 14,200 inhabitants in East at the junction of the Rominto and Pissa Rivers. It is on the main railway to St. Petersburg, and is 21 miles from the Prussian frontier station of Eydtkuhen. The town is 653 miles by rail from St. Petersburg, and 441 miles from Berlin. The express journey occupies 12 hours from Berlin to Eydtkuhen, and 20 hours from Eydtkuhen to St. Petersburg. AUSTRIANS CLAIM TO REPULSE RUSSIANS. ■■'~■' ■ . Amsterdam, August 23. A message from Vienna states that the Austrians repulsed the Russian cavalrv north of Lemberg, the capital of Galicia. One Russian general was killed and another wounded. The latter was conveyed to the hospital at Lemberg. VICTORY OF GREATEST STRATEGIC VALUE. (Rec. August 24,10.15 p.m.) St. Petersburg, August 24, morning. 'A two days' battle was fought at Gumbinnen, in 'East Prussia. General Reun'cmkampf's army was opposed to three Gorman Army Corps with two hundred guns, gaining a victory which is of great strategic value. The German's were driven across the River Augerapp, and lost many guns, and the Russians have Completely onvcloped the remnants. The Russians are now sweeping the environs of Insterburg. t Tho Russians are now holding the lake region. The Russians have occupied Johniinisberg and Ortelsburg. They have also captured Darkelimen, about 20 miles south-east of Insterburg. The Germans have evacuated tho frontier town of Neidenburg, between Soldrin and TVillenberg, first setting it afire. The Russians havo occupied Soldau, and are now threatening the German lines of communication. It is reported the Germans have lost two-thirds of their effectives. ' / - ADVANCE INTO AUSTRIA-HUNGARY CONTINUES. (Rec. August 24, 10.15 p.m.) St. Petersburg, August 24, morning. Nine Russian squadrons attacked and routed a strong Austrian force near Pruhov, between Milochcff and Sboroff, and captured two mounted Latteries and 160 prisoners. • The Austrian forces.which attackel Vladimir.
