MOTORING ACCIDENTS
NARROW ESCAPE IN THE MANA« WATTJ GORGE. (From Our Special CorresporvienU Carterton! "■- August 24. When returning from Talmorston North on Saturday afternoon by motorcar through the Manawatu Gorge, Messrs. T. V. Caverhill, of Carterton, and H. Morrison, of Blairlogio. had a. very unpleasant experience. They were travelling very cautiously through the gorge, and. after haying gone some dis- ' tanee noticed another car approaching round a. rather dangerous bend. Mr. Caverhill pulled up on the roadside. , The approaching car rounded the bend, and crashed into the other, pushing it back some fifteen feet, one of the hind wheels hanging over'a drop into the water of the rivor, 100.feet below. Both cars were badly damaged, and both men had a miroculqu6 escape. The Overland car was a new one, and was occupied by the driver and two ladies, bound for Wansanui. On Saturday night a motor-car being driven north collided with a trap being driven by Mr. J. Martin's son, and containing two ladies and ,Mr. Martin, senr. The impact resulted in Mr.. Martin and the two ladies being thrown out on to the footpath, and the car finished up on tho path also. Dr. M Carthy, of Qreytown, happened to be passing at-the time, and after examination found that no bones had been broken. The'oar and the trap suffered a littM damage. ,
