AND''COMMENTS.
„ IBT.Glxkcoi.l •. Nominations for tho DannovirKe meeting close 011 Monday next. Acceptances for the Marton meeting close on: Tuesday nest, at 9 p.m. i It is Reasonable to mention (says a Melbourne writer) that one of the most notable of war-horses was a black stallion of the Turco breed, known as Captain Byerly's Turk. This horse, whioh was contemporary with James 11, was ono of tho fathers of/the-British thoroughbred, and was the direct ancestor of our great.'siro Fisherman. H.. liingan's pair of jumpers, Stockado and Sutirose,.were not brought back from Kiccarton with the remainder of' • his team;..i Thfey are to race at Amberley nest week, and after that will'remain in tho south for some of the minor meetings. Stockade should be able to win a hurdle race, but Sunrose is only good in a steeplechase. He was going particularly well in. the Aylesbury Steeplechase, and looked a certain placegetter when ho was run off at the second fence of tho Kennels double. Tho absence of this'pair leaves H. Kingan with only .four horses in work, viz., Silver Monarch, Undecided, Big Blast, and Charlerose. Tho two first-named are to race at Marton next month. As a result of the military manoeuvres on the: Awapuni racecourse, "several trainers' have deemed it advisable . to train their horses at Wanganui. A. Shearsby left on Tuesday' with five horses, ;and G. Price left on Thursday with Expect, Garance, and six others, j Jockeys Oliver and 801 l have. accompanied the Highden team. , ' ' ' '
Owing to the war with Germany, several intended exportation from Sydney for studs iri Germany have had to bo cancelled. One of the horses purchased was the sturdy Nuwarsi Eliya, whoso buyer was Mr. Schmidt, on behalf of one of the Governmont studs, where, the' breeding'of grey horses is a specialty. Nuwara, has been withdrawn from training, and had all gone, well tlie ,son, of Orzil would have taken an early departure. It was Mr. Schmidt who brought about the exportation of Parsee, Cadonia, and Hyman. It looks as if the reported sale of Anna Carlovna to Mr. S. Hordern, of Sydney, has fallen through, for at Caul-, field, in the MalakofF Stakes, she raced in E.. A. Connolly's name. It was originally intended to raco Want in the Avondalo Cup and Guineas, but as tho Wanganui Club has now decided to' hold its spring meeting, probably tho Penury colt will be' sent to the nearest meeting. Mr. Lan Duncan received advi<je from Waikanao early this week that tho Achilles —Prelude colt, full-brother to the Welcome Stakes winner Peronilla, had died. It is noticeable that Ventura is lasting much better than any of the other Traquairs that are racing, and the chestnut mare also stays bettor than tho others, who wero nothing but highclass sprinters. As she seems to stand up to travelling, Mr. E. J. Watt 'may decide to send Ventura back to tho dominion to contest the Stead Gold Cup in November, and on present appearances it does not look as if. she would have a very difficult task in front of hor, to score in the big ten furlongs weight-for-age event. Comedietta, tho half-sister to Comedy King, was again produced at Newcastle on August 13,- hut only finished second in llip Maiden Handicap.
